Verses to help you control your anger

“because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.” James 1:20

The Bible tells us that we must manage our emotions and control our temper. Many of us, if we want to admit it, find it very difficult to control our temper, especially when we are angry about something that we dislike or do not find completely reasonable.

Anger is relative. We do not get angry with the same things, but we get angry when something unpleasant or painful happens to us. When we are offended or dismayed by something or someone, we get angry and sometimes we say or do something we regret.

Sometimes we do not even realize how we give ourselves to the anger we have. A friend at school makes fun of you and you do the same and you can even imagine doing violent things to them. A colleague at work does not do what you asked for and you respond by tearing off your tongue as if you are no longer a human being. Also in some marriage situations, if your spouse can not do something you asked for, you may end up hurting the person you promised to love and appreciate.

Uncontrolled anger is not a good thing. Proverbs 16:24 advises us the following:

Pleasant words are like a honeycomb,
Sweetness to the soul and health to the bones.

How to control our temperament

We should all learn to control our temperament. Controlling it does not mean repressing it and denying the pain or discomfort that we feel inside. It simply means training us to these annoyances without the need to do something that offends God. Yes, we can do that.

To help you control your temper, here are some verses from the Bible that you can meditate on and remember to apply to yourself when you are tempted to get angry:

26 “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath,

27 nor give place to the devil.

28 Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need.

29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.

30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice.

32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.

Ephesians 4:26-32

7 Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him;
Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way,
Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass.

8 Cease from anger, and forsake wrath;
Do not fret—it only causes harm.

9 For evildoers shall be [a]cut off;
But those who wait on the Lord,
They shall inherit the earth.

Psalm 37:7-9

21 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’

22 But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’ shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be in danger of hell fire.

Matthew 5:21-22
