The Lord is our shield

It is good to recognize that God is our strong shield, and that He will protect us at all times of difficulty no matter where we are because God will always be there.

We wait in hope for the Lord;
he is our help and our shield.

Psalm 33:20

Definition of a shield:

Defense weapon that serves to protect the body from the opponent’s blows,
formed by a metal or wood plate that is held by the arm.
“The shield is carried on the arm opposite to the one that manages the attack weapon”

As this definition says, in times of war the shield was used by the soldiers to protect themselves from the attacks of the adversaries. It was a great protection tool.

A soldier could not go out to battle without his shield or his armor, these protections allowed the soldiers to last longer fighting their opponents.

In him our hearts rejoice,
for we trust in his holy name.

Psalm 33:21

If God is our shield, we should be confident like a lion all the time, only worrying that this shield is always protecting us from all plans of the enemy and from all the wickedness of the evil one.

Our confidence must be placed in the Lord God of hosts, without fear what can make us lose heart, because He is our shield forever.

May your unfailing love be with us, Lord,
even as we put our hope in you.

Psalm 33:22

It is good that we understand that His mercy keeps us from all evil, because that is His divine will, so let us never forget that He will always be our shield and that He will remain so for all eternity.

The word of God is faithful and true and never fails and will never fail. He does not lie, but He keeps His promises above all that opposes God’s being our shield. So if you are hopeless because someone told you that there is no one who takes care of you and that you do not have a shield over you, tell them that it is a lie because there is a God who is our hope and strong shield, and who remains forever.

When we meditate on the idea that God is our shield, we should not imagine a small or fragile defense, but rather a powerful, immovable and eternal protection. In biblical times, a shield represented life itself, because without it the soldier was exposed to the arrows and attacks of the enemy. In the same way, without God’s covering we would be vulnerable to the spiritual battles that surround us every day. Yet the Lord does not allow us to fight alone; He stands before us, beside us and behind us, covering every angle of our lives with His perfect care.

There are moments when the attacks are not physical but emotional or spiritual. Thoughts of fear, anxiety or discouragement often come like darts trying to destabilize our faith. However, the Scriptures remind us that God lifts His shield and stops every dart before it reaches our hearts. This is why the psalmist could affirm with confidence that their hearts rejoiced in Him, because they trusted in His holy name. Trust produces joy, and joy strengthens our faith to continue walking even in seasons where we do not clearly see the path.

Many believers throughout history have testified how God has acted as their shield in times of affliction. Some were protected from danger, others from temptation and others from despair. Each testimony reveals a deep truth: the shield of God does not fail, nor does it weaken, nor does it break under pressure. He covers us in moments of anguish, sustains us in seasons of confusion, and reminds us that there is no enemy powerful enough to destroy those who hide under His wings.

Moreover, God not only protects us, but also teaches us through His protection. When we feel threatened, we learn to trust. When we feel weak, we learn to depend on His strength. When we feel surrounded, we learn that He is the One who fights for us. This spiritual growth is part of His mercy, because His shield is not only physical protection but a divine tool that shapes our character and strengthens our faith so that we may stand firm amid adversity.

Therefore, it is essential that every day we consciously choose to take refuge in God. His shield is not automatic for those who walk far from Him, but for those who place their hope in His Name, as the psalm affirms. When we seek Him, trust Him, and obey Him, His covering surrounds us in ways we cannot fully understand but can always experience. His unfailing love becomes evident, guiding, protecting and sustaining us in every situation.

May this truth strengthen your heart today. No matter the battles you face or the voices that rise against you, God is your strong shield. He protects you, He sustains you, and He will continue doing so for all eternity. Rest in His promises and walk with confidence, knowing that the Almighty watches over your path with perfect love and unwavering faithfulness.
