Humility lesson: The foot washer

A lesson of humility is what we found when Jesus washed the feet of His disciples, because He taught them that they had to do the same with their brothers, because if He, being the greatest in the kingdom of heaven, did it, what else does He leave us to us who are small before Him?.

Jesus was always speaking to the disciples, teaching them about being compassionate towards others, Jesus was doing all this because He would one day leave this earth. These teachings served for when His disciples walked all over the world preaching, teaching about the good news of salvation.

For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.

John 13:15

Jesus spoke to them and set the example so that none of them would forget to do this with their neighbors, and this so that they understood that, even if they considered themselves older or younger, they could make this gesture of humility.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.

John 13:16

Jesus sets an example about His Father, who is greater than Him and that those around Him, giving them to understand that, if He can do these things with us, what can we say about the Father who created us, who gave us life, that created all the things that are around us, and that His mercies are upon us every day, and that they are new day after day?.

If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.

John 13:17

Blessed is he who knows these things and puts them into practice, as the previous verse says. We hope that we can put these teachings of Jesus for the disciples into practice, showing humility with others.

  1. I have a pressing issue which requires Christian brothers and sisters to help with.
An aunt and her daughter runs a clinic. That aunt approached one young niece to work as an admin staff when that niece was gainfully employed in another role in her educational training. After the HR staff at the clinic interviewed that young niece, that young niece was deemed not suitable for the admin staff position at that clinic. However, that aunt did not let that young niece know due to being relatives. Apparently, that aunt did not inform her daughter about asking that young niece to work for them. Instead, the HR gave the young niece the employment contract letter to sign off. That aunt and her daughter has been quarreling about it. That young niece, being young and just into the first year of work after graduation, tendered her resignation at her most recent role mentioned above to accept the role at the clinic. That aunt told another two aunties about the result of the interview and said she will ask the HR staff to talk to that young niece. The other aunties insisted that young niece should not turn up at the clinic to work when she is not wanted to start with, although the employment contract letter has been signed, to make that aunt and her daughter guilty. When the other aunties asked that aunt about it, she denied out right and said they are really happy for that young niece to work at the clinic, a change in what she said. Yup, the aunties are sisters. I think that young niece should go work at the clinic to fulfill what she has already signed for and look for another job in the meantime, putting pride aside. What do you guys think from a Christian perspective?

We can learn of the Lord Jesus Christ, who is meek and lowly in heart.
He invites us to learn of Him, to be join to Him to take his words to heart, and to follow Him, and imitate Him in his behaviour, in his actions, which are good.

His attitude of depending on the Father, in all he did, is also worth mentioning. We remember that he consulted the Father and said:
“Father, I thank you that you have heard me.”
    (John 11:41)

And here’s another of His lessons of humility: by washing his disciples’ feet, he showed us he did not consider his greatness something to be used to his own advantage —though in his personal character he really is great, the same with the Father, the almighty God of Heaven and Earth.

He is meek and lowly in heart; so meek that he didn’t mind to relate with the poor of the world, speaking and eating with them, for he had come to do that. And to share their difficulties and troubles: he cured their sicknesses and received their kids, both young and old people, and wept with them. He pitied that widow that had lost her only son, and he raised him to life.
He cried out and was very sorry for people, as he expressed, looking at Jerusalem:
    “O Jerusalem….
how often would I have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chickens under her wings, and you would not!” (Matthew 23:37)

In no way can we be as he is, but we can consider his words and think about what he means while he said:
“Take my yoke on you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and you shall find rest to your souls.
    (Matthew 11:29)

A lesson we can learn is that it is of no use to be proud or consider ourselves greater than others in any way. The reason for that is all gifts we may have, we have got from God, and we must go forward and serve him, truly wanting to do his Will.
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.
If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.” (John 13:16-17)

May each one of us give their spirit, soul and body to the Lord, and pray that he may lead our lives to his service

    1. Thanks Alfonso for the lovely words of the Lord. The young niece wants to go work at the clinic, but the other aunties insist that she does not. I pray that God will lead the young niece to make a final decision which is pleasing to God.
