When we are going through difficult or uncomfortable times we tend to make prayers of rebuke against satan and his demons and sometimes we even see that none of this serves us and we sink deeper into affliction and problems. I believe that the Bible is our manual par excellence and from this manual we have a lot to learn every day.
James said in his letter:
7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
9 Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom.
10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.
James 4: 7-10
Are you fighting against the evil one? For all of us who are Christians fight against the evil one, the Bible itself tells us that we have no war against flesh and blood, but against principalities and hosts of evil and this makes our struggle even stronger, since we are faced with a world physical and spiritual, which is much more difficult.
But what should we do to fight this spiritual battle? We just have to do what every Christian is supposed to do: “submit to God”, and the way we submit to God is keeping His word and in this way we resist satan and he have to flee from us.
Are you extremely pressured by satan? Be quiet, this is something that we have to go through, because he walks like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour, but regardless of his tricks we must remember what James himself says later: “Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom.” This promise must give us enough hope.
It only remains for us to humble ourselves every day before God and when that day arrives He will exalt us.
Many times the mistake we make in moments of anguish is believing that everything is resolved simply by rebuking the enemy, yet the Scriptures show us that the true strength of the believer does not lie in shouting, but in obedience. Submitting to God is not a passive act; it is a constant and daily practice of surrendering our will, recognizing our limitations, and trusting that the Lord has absolute control over every circumstance we experience. When we walk in that submission, our spiritual vision becomes clearer and we begin to understand that the greatest battlefield is not around us but within us.
James reminds us that drawing near to God is the only path to genuine resistance. When we cultivate prayer, meditation on the Word, and a life of holiness, we establish a firm ground where the enemy has no legal space to operate. Many believers weaken because they want victory without consecration, resistance without obedience, and triumph without humility. However, the Bible teaches us that resisting the devil is the consequence of first submitting to God, not the other way around.
It is also important to recognize that spiritual warfare is not a sign that God has abandoned us. On the contrary, trials mold our character and strengthen our dependence on Him. Every believer throughout history has faced battles, and each of them has found refuge in the same truth: God exalts the humble. When we allow brokenness to lead us to repentance, when we mourn over our sins and seek God with sincerity, then our hearts are purified and we become stronger in faith.
Affliction should never be seen as the end of the road, but as a process through which God shapes our lives. The enemy pressures us, yes, but he cannot destroy what God sustains. The call to change our laughter to mourning is not a call to live in sadness, but an invitation to take seriously the spiritual state of our soul, to recognize that without God we are nothing, and that dependence on Him is our greatest strength.
Therefore, let us continue walking with humility, submitting every area of our life to the Lord, resisting temptation, and drawing near to His presence. In due time, God Himself will lift us up, strengthen us, and give us the victory that He has promised to those who persevere faithfully. Our spiritual battles are temporary, but the reward of obedience is eternal.
The Theology of Spiritual Submission
To understand the depth of James’s message, we must dissect the concept of spiritual submission. In a world that promotes self-sufficiency and personal pride, the idea of “submitting” often carries a negative connotation. However, in the kingdom of God, submission is the ultimate source of power. When we align our will with the Creator, we are no longer fighting with our limited human strength, but we are backed by the omnipotence of God. This divine alignment is what truly intimidates the forces of darkness.
The Order of the Divine Protocol
The biblical text establishes a very specific order: first, submit to God; second, resist the devil. Many believers experience failure because they attempt to reverse this order. They try to fight the enemy while still harboring rebellion or disobedience in their hearts. Resistance without submission is merely religious noise. The devil does not flee because of the volume of our voice, but because of the authority of our position in Christ. When we are fully submitted, we are covered by the shadow of the Almighty, making us an impenetrable target for the fiery darts of the wicked one.
The Nature of Our Spiritual Adversary
Understanding the enemy is crucial for any strategy of defense. The Bible describes him as a deceiver, an accuser, and a predator. His goal is not always to destroy us physically, but to disconnect us from our source of life: God. By creating doubt, fear, and guilt, he seeks to make us “double-minded,” as James warns. A double-minded person is unstable in all their ways, oscillating between faith and worldliness, which renders their spiritual resistance ineffective.
The Roaring Lion and the Subtle Serpent
The enemy uses two primary tactics. Sometimes he acts as a roaring lion, using overt persecution and massive problems to paralyze us with fear. At other times, he acts as a subtle serpent, introducing small compromises and “little sins” that slowly erode our spiritual integrity. In both cases, the remedy is the same: drawing near to God. In His presence, the lion’s roar loses its power, and the serpent’s lies are exposed by the light of Truth.
Purification: The Path to Spiritual Authority
James 4:8 gives us a practical command: “Wash your hands… and purify your hearts.” This speaks of a dual cleansing. Washing hands refers to our external actions—what we do, where we go, and how we interact with the world. Purifying hearts refers to our internal motivations and desires. We cannot expect to have victory in spiritual warfare if we are playing with the very things that the enemy uses to enslave the world. Holiness is not a burden; it is a defensive wall that protects the believer from the influence of darkness.
The Danger of the Double-Minded Heart
To be “double-minded” is to have a divided loyalty. It is wanting the blessings of God while maintaining the lifestyle of the world. This internal conflict creates a “leak” in our spiritual armor. To resist effectively, we must have a singular focus. Our heart must be fully set on pleasing the Lord. When our heart is unified in its purpose to seek God, the enemy finds no “handle” or legal ground to grab onto in our lives.
The Paradox of Mourning and Joy
The instruction to “change your laughter to mourning” seems counterintuitive. In a culture obsessed with toxic positivity and superficial happiness, James calls us to godly sorrow. This is not a call to depression, but to a deep realization of the seriousness of sin and the state of our world. When we mourn over our spiritual condition, we are opening the door for true divine comfort. Only those who recognize their spiritual poverty can be filled with the riches of God’s grace.
Gloom as a Prelude to Glory
The “gloom” mentioned by James is the soberness of a heart that has come to its senses. It is the Prodigal Son realizing he is eating with pigs when he should be in his Father’s house. This moment of brokenness is necessary for restoration. Without it, our joy is hollow. But when we humble ourselves to the point of mourning, God promises to lift us up. The height of our exaltation by God is directly proportional to the depth of our humility before Him.
Practical Steps for Daily Resistance
How do we apply these principles in the middle of a crisis? Resistance is a disciplined lifestyle. It involves the consistent use of the “Armor of God” described in Ephesians 6. We must clothe ourselves daily with the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, and the shield of faith. However, the fuel for this armor is constant prayer and a heart that remains in a state of submission.
The Power of the Word as a Weapon
When Jesus was tempted in the desert, He did not rebuke the devil based on His feelings or His status as the Son of God alone; He used the Scriptures. “It is written” was His primary weapon. To resist the devil, we must know the manual. If we do not know what the Bible says about our situation, we will believe the lies of the enemy. Memorizing and meditating on the Word builds a mental and spiritual fortress that the enemy cannot breach.
Developing a Routine of Humility
Humility is a muscle that needs exercise. We humble ourselves when we admit we are wrong, when we ask for help, and when we prioritize God’s commands over our personal preferences. A humble believer is invincible because they have nothing to lose and nothing to prove; their identity is hidden in Christ. This freedom from ego is what makes the devil flee, as he can no longer use pride—his own original sin—to manipulate the believer.
The Promise of Divine Exaltation
The final goal of this process is not to leave us in the dust of humility, but to see us restored and exalted by God’s hand. “He will lift you up” is a guarantee. This lifting up might mean a change in circumstances, a promotion in spiritual authority, or a supernatural peace that transcends understanding. God is a Father who delights in rewarding those who seek Him with a sincere heart.
Waiting for the Lord’s Timing
A significant part of spiritual warfare is patience. We often want an immediate exit from our problems, but God uses the duration of the struggle to refine us. Submission includes trusting God’s timing. If we try to lift ourselves up, we will eventually fall. But if we wait for the Lord to lift us up, we will stand on solid ground that no storm can move. Our current affliction is producing in us an eternal weight of glory that far outweighs the temporary pain of the battle.
The Community Aspect of Spiritual Warfare
While James writes to individuals, we must remember that the Christian life is also a corporate experience. We are not meant to resist alone. Drawing near to God often involves drawing near to His body, the Church. Accountability, communal prayer, and the support of brothers and sisters in Christ provide a secondary layer of protection. When we are weak, the faith of others can help sustain us until we find our strength again in the presence of the Lord.
Concluding Thoughts on Eternal Victory
Ultimately, the struggle against the evil one is a battle already won at the Cross. Our role is not to achieve the victory, but to enforce the victory that Jesus has already secured. By submitting to God, resisting the devil, and maintaining a heart of humility, we walk in the triumph of Christ. Let us not be discouraged by the intensity of the fight, for the One who is in us is greater than the one who is in the world. Stand firm, stay submitted, and watch as the enemy flees while the Lord lifts you to new heights of spiritual maturity and grace.

Resist the devil and he will flee from you

The Lord God sometimes lets the Devil make us fall into temptation. We can be overcome and sin against God’s law. He wants us to be near Him. But because we love rest and gaiety, we stop being on guard against our souls’ enemy, the Devil, who seeks to deprive us of our privileges as children of God. Satan, who knows we are more than conquerors through our Lord Jesus Christ, is trying to deceive us since he learnt about our weakness and lack of faith.
In temptation we must resist the Devil and he will flee from us.
The apostle teaches us:
“Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom.
Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.” James 4: 9-10
This is the best way to resist the Devil.
Let’s adopt an attitude of humiliation before God, praying to Him with grieve, mourning and wailing, seeking Him with a broken heart.
Doing this the Devil will flee from us. God’s grace protects us from the power of evil, and Jesus will be our defender in bad times.
The word of the Lord is living and active
we use the word of God
Speak it out and the devil will flee
Afraid…..God is our protection
Sick……God is our healer
Alone…..God is our refuge
Unsave……God is our salvation
