The centurion: A faith that amazed Jesus

The article of today is based in the story of the centurion:

5 Now when Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to Him, pleading with Him,

6 saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, dreadfully tormented.”

7 And Jesus said to him, “I will come and heal him.”

8 The centurion answered and said, “Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed.

9 For I also am a man under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

10 When Jesus heard it, He marveled, and said to those who followed, “Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!

11 And I say to you that many will come from east and west, and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.

12 But the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go your way; and as you have believed, so let it be done for you.” And his servant was healed that same hour.

Matthew 8: 5-13

The Scriptures teaches us in Hebrews 11:1 that faith is the assurance of what we are waiting for to be done, and we are convinced of that even though we are not seeing it:

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Hebrews 11:1

But how confident and convinced are we? What level does our faith can reach?

Jesus performed numerous miracles, many of them healing, among them we can mention: the leper, the mother-in-law of Peter, the paralytic, the man with the dry hand, the woman with the blood flow, the sick of Genesaret, the lunatic, the two blind men and the multitude of sick people that put at their feet in the Sea of Galilee. What do these faith stories have in common? In almost all of them Jesus touched the sick (or the sick touched Jesus), and in all of them, Jesus was physically where the sick person was, and at this point is where we can notice something special if we compare all these stories with the story of the centurion.

The centurion, likewise, had faith. But the centurion’s faith was special. So special that it surprised Jesus himself. The centurion went to Jesus to ask him to heal his servant who was paralyzed and prostrated in the centurion’s house. Jesus immediately expressed that he would go to his house to heal him. But the centurion, who did not feel worthy to receive the Master in his house, said that the Master did not have to go, that only His Word was enough for his servant to be healthy. When Jeses heard these words of faith from the centurion, He said: “Not even in Israel have I found so much faith.”

Many Christians say they have faith. But in practice they seem to prove the opposite. They know that God can do great things for their lives but instead of believing and asking Him directly, they have to turn to other human beings. They wait for a preacher to pray for them, for another mortal to touch them and say some words to truly feel that God is at work. While it is true that we sometimes need a word of encouragement, we must remember that God knows all our needs and the petitions of our heart and that if we have faith and trust in Him, in His time He will grant us victory.

Let’s have faith in our God. Remember that there is nothing impossible for Him. We are His sons. He will not forsake us. Let’s trust and believe in Him. Amen.

The centurion answered and said, “Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed.” Matthew 8:8
The Lord Jesus Christ was amazed that the centurion had so great a faith. The centurion besides, was a humble man among soldiers of Rome, in general proud and cruel people; and his faith was greater than all Israel, that had received testimony of the Law and prophets: he did show such an amazing faith.

The Lord Jesus said to them, as we have already read:
“And I say to you that many will come from east and west, and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven”
    Matthew 8:11

Surely this revelation of Jesus was not accepted by Jewish people that considered that foreigners were like dogs, and they do not want to meet them anywhere…

And later, people who had heard Peter were astonished because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. (Acts 10:45).

Maybe we are mostly gentiles among the children of God, and I think that the testimony of that centurion could be worth to be imitated by us.

It is was such a beautiful thing that Jesus was amazed by the centurion’s faith, that we, humiliated before Him in the Spirit, should repeat, like the centurion:

“Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof.”
And after that, we beg for help to Him in all our troubles, and, like the centurion, we feel the assurance that our petition has been heard and hear the voice of Jesus in our soul, that says to us:

“Go your way; and as you have believed, so let it be done for you.”

  14. The centurion: A faith that amazed Jesus
    =====================
The power of God acts among people without not discriminating on the basis of their race, tongue or nation, giving them his gifts or faith; as was the case of the amazing faith of the Centurion, that moved the Lord Jesus Christ to heal his servant:
“The centurion answered and said, “Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed.”

We know that this man was a foreigner, one of those who were hated by the Jews: he really was a Roman, one of those in general proud men. Besides, he was a chief in the army.
The centurion recognized he was not worthy of the Lord Jesus going into his house, because Jesus is the Lord and he did not have to bow down before him. The centurion admitted the authority of the Lord and his power, and he said: “only speak a word and my servant will be healed”

What teaching must we take from this man?
In our needs and troubles, we must go closer to the Lord and pray to him, knowing that he is powerful to help us; admitting we are nothing and deserve nothing from Him. Acknowledging that we are creatures and he is the Lord, that we are sinners and he is just and good. That he loves us and we hardly love him a little.

    We must give our all
to Him without reservation, just as we are, miserable people, but trusting in his mercy and compassion. He wants to help us and he will do so in due time.

May we give glory to the Lord God of our lives, will protects us and wants us to be humble people for Him and our neighbour. Amen.

  15. The centurion:
    A faith that amazed Jesus
=======================Salvation came from the Jews, and it was the Israelites who could benefit from the mercy of God. But they rejected the message preached by Jesus, the Saviour sent to his people to save them, and instead they crucified Him, even to the point of provoking God’s wrath against themselves when they cried out:
“and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.”(Matthew 27:25)
And it was so, as they said, some years later…

So the gospel of Jesus should be preached to all the world, to the church of Jesus Christ, through his disciples and others: all of them who are sent have to announce the good tidings of salvation.
It is by faith in the beloved Son of God, that all men and women can come to believe in the revelation of God, given to all people of the world.

That centurion, from the legions of Rome which had invaded Israel, was a foreigner that had heard about Jesus and was willing to meet Him. He did know Jesus was a man who had come from God, and he asked Him that his servant be healed.

The centurion answered and said, “Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed.” (Matthew 8:8)

The power of God came over the centurion and infused the marvelous gift of faith in his mind and spirit. That faith was unusual for those people, much more in a gentile who used to believe in heathen gods.
Jesus was amazed at such a faith, and He showed that faith would also be for other people outside Israel, which was prophesied by Isaiah.

Now we are still amazed that the mercy of God has also come to us, who were sinners and separate from the original people of God (Israel).

May we thank God for this grace we have received to believe in Jesus and be chosen and adopted children of God
