Living for the eternity

God, for His immense mercy, has called us and has not only called us but has brought us to His ways and we rejoice in it, because people like us, sinners, ungodly, we were led by all kinds of immorality, however, that sin that we used to love, now we hate it. The question is why? The only reason is that God loves us and that love produces holiness in us.

In the Bible there are different promises for us as a people of God, and it is very important that we know what those promises are. Today we are going to talk about the greater promise that the scriptures offer us: “Eternity”. God has promised us eternal life through His Son Jesus Christ, and that is precisely why we find in the Scriptures: “For God so loved the world, so that everyone who believes in Him may not be lost, but may have life eternal “(John 3:16). We have that promise and it is the divine seal that we are saved from hell and sin.

Now, do we believe that we have eternal life but do not live for the eternity? This would be a huge mistake, because if we say that we are saved by God then we must live for the eternity, we have to do eternal things, we can not live life wasting time on things that God does not like, we can not allow the entertainment end with us, soap operas, videogames, movies, etc. We must first have the heavenly things and in this way we will have a spiritually prosperous life in the Lord.

The Bible says:

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.

John 6:47

We do not have eternal life when we go to heaven, from the moment that Christ has made us free, exactly at that moment is when we have eternal life. Eternity is not begun in heaven, it begins here on earth. And we have to ask God to teach us to be more like Him every day of our lives so we can undertake this glorious path without turning aside to the right or the left.

When we speak of eternity, we are not referring only to a future hope reserved for the moment when we leave this world. Eternity is a present reality that transforms every area of our lives. To possess eternal life is to possess a new nature—one that longs to honor God, to delight in His Word, and to walk in holiness. This is why sin, which once dominated us, now becomes something we reject. The heart renewed by Christ no longer enjoys what once enslaved it. Instead, it yearns for what is pure, noble, and eternal. This inward transformation is the greatest evidence that we truly belong to God and that His promise of eternal life is operating within us even now.

Understanding eternity also changes our priorities. A person who knows that his citizenship is in heaven begins to see earthly things through different eyes. The pleasures that once seemed so important lose their power. The ambitions that once consumed our time and energy become secondary. Entertainment, distractions, and the temporary glories of this world fade when compared to the weight of eternal glory that awaits the children of God. This does not mean we cannot enjoy the blessings God gives us on earth, but it does mean that nothing should replace or diminish our pursuit of Him. The Christian who lives with eternity in view invests in prayer, service, holiness, and love—things that endure forever.

And as we walk this path toward eternity, God Himself sustains us. Eternal life is not maintained by our own strength but by the preserving power of the Holy Spirit. He teaches us, convicts us, corrects us, and guides us so that we do not drift away. The God who rescued us from darkness is the same God who keeps us standing until the end. This is why Paul could say with confidence: “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion.” Our walk toward eternity is secure because it rests not on our unstable efforts but on the unchanging faithfulness of God. Let us then walk with joy, knowing that eternity has already begun in us and will be perfected in the glorious presence of Christ.

The Foundations of an Eternal Perspective in Daily Living

When we use our resources—our time, talents, and finances—for God’s glory, we are building a legacy that will never fade. The promise of eternity gives us the courage to be generous, knowing that our Father in heaven sees and rewards what is done in secret for His sake.

Developing a Heart of Worship

Worship is the language of eternity. In heaven, the heavenly hosts never cease to praise the holiness of God. By cultivating a heart of worship here on earth, we are preparing ourselves for our eternal occupation. While rest is necessary, the obsession with movies, videogames, and social media can become a “thin content” existence that starves the spirit. The enemy uses these tools to dull our spiritual senses and make us indifferent to the needs of the Kingdom. To live for eternity is to be intentional with our leisure. We should seek out activities that edify our souls and strengthen our walk with the Lord. By choosing heavenly things over worldly distractions, we protect our spiritual vitality and ensure that our lamp stays burning brightly as we wait for the return of the Bridegroom.

The Discipline of Spiritual Focus

Maintaining focus on the eternal path requires spiritual discipline. Like an athlete training for a race, the believer must exercise their spirit through prayer, fasting, and the study of the Holy Scriptures. These disciplines are not meant to earn salvation, but to keep us spiritually fit and sensitive to the voice of the Holy Spirit. Without discipline, we are prone to drift back into old patterns of thought and behavior. The commitment to holiness is a daily decision to pick up our cross and follow Jesus. This persistence is what leads to a spiritually prosperous life that honors God in every season.

To live for eternity is to be totally committed to the person of Jesus Christ. Our eternal reward is not based on how comfortable our lives were on earth, but on how faithful we were to the calling we received.
