In the Bible we can find many times where the corruption of men made God very angry, but we can also find the mercy of God spread to men in various events. Today our world suffers the same damages because of corruption, it stuns us to turn on the television and watch news, since every time we see something worse. But, in the midst of all this crisis there is a God who has mercy.
The Bible tells us about a city called Nineveh, which was very corrupt. In the book of Jonah, the Bible tells us that their wickedness had risen before God and that is why God sends Jonah to preach against that place. Nineveh was a city that deserved to be destroyed by all the ruthless and perverse acts that they did, but there is something very important that we must understand, and it is that no matter how corrupt a nation is if they humble themselves before God.
That city repented of their sins and this is why Jonah says to God:
1 But to Jonah this seemed very wrong, and he became angry.
2 He prayed to the Lord, “Isn’t this what I said, Lord, when I was still at home? That is what I tried to forestall by fleeing to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity.
Jonah 4:1-2
There are some very important words that Jonah says about God, which are attributes of him: “Gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity.” God does not want the destruction of human beings, on the contrary, He always wants us to turn to Him. God does not rejoice in evil, nor is pleased in destruction.
The Bible also tells us:
If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
2 Chronicles 7:14
God is always waiting for His creatures to humble themselves before Him, for He is a merciful God and His mercies are eternal and if a city humbles itself before Him, no matter how corrupt they may be, God can manifest His mercy.
Pray for our nation, for our land, and ask God to have mercy on all things that are happening and that people can come to repentance in their hearts.
