Temptations are those tests that we would never want to have in our daily life, but unfortunately they are the daily bread of every Christian and we must have the necessary tools to overcome them. The temptations not only reach you and me, but also came to Jesus’ life at certain times. And this is the good news, that our Master was tempted and could overcome, and in the same way it is very certain that God will give us victory in all our temptations.
Let’s read Matthew 4:
1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.
3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,
One of the things that shows that we are true Christians is temptation and we can not avoid them, but we can overcome them, the greatest example of this was shown to us by Jesus Christ. He was led into the desert by the Spirit’s own will to be tempted. This does not mean that God tempts us, but it does mean that God allows temptation in our lives.
Many people think that because Jesus is the Son of God it was easy for him to overcome temptation, but that is not the case. He was a man of flesh and blood just like you and me, but he was a man who knew how to stay in submission before God. One of the commands that Christ gives us is: Pray without ceasing, so that you do not fall into temptation. And many times we forget about prayer and that’s why we end up falling into sins that we could have avoided.
Undoubtedly, in our chosen text, Satan told one other truths to Jesus. Christ had the power to turn stone into bread, Jesus could do miracles never seen before. But the purpose of the devil was to divert Jesus from God’s purpose.
A very powerful weapon that Christ used in this battle was the Word of God. The Sacred Scriptures will be something vital in our Christian life, through them we know what is the true purpose of God and with that we do not listen to the voice of the evil one.
So, no matter what kind of temptations you are involved in, Christ was involved in situations where nor you or I may have been and God gave him the victory. And I know that God will also give us the victory. God bless you.
