The Spirit helps us in our weakness

We human beings are full of endless weaknesses, because that is the nature that we have inherited from Adam, but, the fact that we are under weaknesses and imperfections is not something for that we should faint, on the contrary, the Spirit of God helps us in those weaknesses and in those trials that we sometimes think we will never get over.

If you are a weak Christian, that is good, that weakness brings us closer to God because we realize that we need Him and that our hope is not in ourselves but in Him. I remember a few years ago when a certain person said while preaching: “This place is not for the weak, it is for the strong”. At that time I was thinking about several passages of the Bible and I realized that God is not really looking for strong people, He is looking for weak people, and in the Bible we find several examples: Elijah fled from Jezebel (1 Kings 19), Job wished he had not been born (Job 3), Peter denied Jesus three times (Matthew 26), among others. The truth is that we are also subject to these weaknesses, but like them, God sustains us in the midst of so many trials.

The Bible says:

26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.

27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.

Romans 8:26-27

Dear brothers, this must be our hope and our joy, that in the midst of all the things that can happen to us we serve a powerful God who gives us His help, who never abandons us, who renews our strength like those of the buffalo, who makes us fly as high as the eagle. The apostle Paul did know that he was an expert in knowing this God who helps the weak.

Our weaknesses, far from being a reason for shame, are opportunities for God to manifest His greatness. When we come before Him acknowledging our inability, He shows Himself as the One who sustains, lifts, restores, and strengthens. Many times we think that to serve God we must be perfect, or live a life without failures or struggles, yet the Scriptures show us the opposite: God glorifies Himself through fragile vessels, through imperfect people who depend fully on Him.

Think of Moses, who felt incapable of speaking; of Gideon, who saw himself as the least of his house; or Jeremiah, who feared because of his youth. None of these men seemed ideal for the mission entrusted to them, and yet God chose them precisely because His power would be evident in their limitations. The same is true for us today. Our weaknesses remind us that the Christian walk is not sustained by human ability but by divine grace.

It is also important to recognize that weakness teaches us humility. When life confronts us with situations we cannot solve on our own, our pride breaks and our heart is softened. This inner work allows God to shape our character and draw us closer to Him in sincere dependence. Many believers testify that their deepest spiritual growth occurred not in moments of strength, but in seasons of profound fragility.

Another comforting truth is that God understands our weaknesses because Jesus Himself experienced human limitation. The Bible tells us that He was tempted in all things but without sin, which means that He can sympathize with our struggles. This reality gives us confidence to approach the throne of grace, knowing that we are not judged for our frailty but embraced by divine compassion.

Let us not forget that the Holy Spirit plays a central role in this process. As the apostle Paul said, the Spirit intercedes for us in our weakness, even when we do not know what to pray for. There are moments when our soul is so burdened that words fail; nevertheless, the Spirit of God translates our groans and presents them before the Father according to His perfect will. What a glorious truth — we are not alone even in the silent struggles that no one else sees.

Therefore, instead of hiding or denying our weaknesses, let us present them to God with confidence. He is the One who turns our vulnerability into spiritual strength, He is the One who walks with us through valleys of shadow, and He is the One who sustains us even when discouragement tries to consume us. Let every weakness be a reminder that the grace of God is sufficient and His power is made perfect in weakness.
