We will not turn away from you

Who among us has not gone through any difficult time in life, for those moments where you might not want to continue living, when we feel that all the difficult things fall on us, moments in which even many have thought to turn away from God. But turning away from God will never be the solution, for which it is good that we keep the same words of the psalmist: “We will not turn away from you”.

The psalmist Asaph said:

17 Let your hand rest on the man at your right hand, the son of man you have raised up for yourself.
18 Then we will not turn away from you; revive us, and we will call on your name.
19 Restore us, Lord God Almighty; make your face shine on us, that we may be saved.
Psalm 80:17-19

We should never think that we have enough strength to fight alone, we should never think that we are strong and that we should not bother God for our problems, God will always be ready to listen to us and help us in those difficult times. Remember that the Bible teaches us that God looks at the humble up close and the haughty at a distance and one of the bases to be humble is to understand the need for God in each moment.

The Bible says:

23 This is what the Lord says:
“Let not the wise boast of their wisdom
or the strong boast of their strength
or the rich boast of their riches,
Jeremiah 9:23

We should never think that we are strong enough to fight alone. Without God we are nothing and if we are standing or we drink a glass of water it is because of the great mercy of God, otherwise we could not even walk.

The psalmist says that if the hand of God was with them, they would never turn away from God. Let us pray to God that His hand will never turn away from us, since it is the only way we can stand firm in this fallen world.

When we meditate on these passages, we realize that the human heart is fragile and easily shaken by adversity. There are seasons where the storms of life seem unbearable, and the weight of trials threatens to extinguish our hope. Yet, Scripture constantly reminds us that these moments are precisely the ones that should draw us closer to God. Instead of pushing Him away, we are invited to seek His face, to cry out for restoration, and to trust that His hand will sustain us.

The psalmist’s cry, “Restore us, Lord God Almighty,” is not simply the prayer of a desperate man, but the echo of every believer who recognizes that renewal, strength, and perseverance come only from God. It is an acknowledgment that, without His intervention, our hearts can easily wander, our faith can weaken, and our steps can falter. However, when His face shines upon us, everything changes. His presence brings clarity, purpose, and the assurance that we are not walking alone.

Many people, when facing hardships, believe that distancing themselves from God will ease their burden. They think that walking away from faith, prayer, or the church will silence the discomfort they feel inside. But this is a deception of the soul. The farther we walk from God, the heavier life becomes. The closer we draw to Him, the more we discover that His grace is sufficient, that His love sustains, and that His mercy renews us every morning.

Jeremiah reminds us not to boast in human abilities, because our wisdom, strength, and resources are temporary and insufficient. In moments of crisis, none of these things can truly rescue the heart. Only God can revive what has withered inside us. Only He can restore our courage, renew our purpose, and breathe life into areas where hopelessness has taken root.

Therefore, instead of trusting in our own capacity, we must learn to surrender our struggles to Him. True humility is not weakness; it is the recognition that we depend entirely on the One who created us. When we acknowledge our need for God, He strengthens us, lifts us up, and reminds us that His hand is powerful enough to sustain us in every battle.

May we, like the psalmist, make this declaration our own: “We will not turn away from You.” No matter the trial, no matter the darkness, may our hearts remain firm in the One who restores, revives, and saves.

Whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved
The king of glory
