In the opening lines of this psalm, chapter 62, we can see the psalmist speaking directly to his own soul. David exhorts his inner being to remain in a place of trust, a stable and secure place that cannot be shaken by circumstances. This self-exhortation reveals a deep spiritual discipline: David does not wait for his emotions to align on their own, but deliberately commands his soul to trust in God. His confidence was not placed in human strength, political alliances, or personal ability, but in the Lord alone.
Psalm 62 is a psalm of quiet confidence. Unlike other psalms where David cries out in anguish or fear, here we see a calm and resolute faith. David had learned through suffering that true rest does not come from the absence of enemies, but from the presence of God. His soul had found a firm resting place, and that place was the Lord.
This teaches us an important lesson: faith is often an act of the will. David speaks to his soul because he knows that the soul can easily be troubled, distracted, or discouraged. By directing his soul toward God, he anchors his inner life in truth rather than emotion. Trust, in this sense, is a conscious decision rooted in the knowledge of who God is.
It is clear that we must learn to rest in God. When we attempt to place one foot on the rock and the other on unstable ground, the unstable ground will inevitably collapse. Divided trust always leads to instability. David makes it clear that the man who places his full trust in God alone will find rest and will not stumble or slip.
This divided stance is common in human experience. Many want the security of God while still relying on their own strength, resources, or plans. But Scripture consistently teaches that such a position is unsustainable. True peace is found only when trust is complete and undivided. God does not share the foundation of our faith with anything else.
David had learned this truth through experience. He had seen the weakness of human support and the unreliability of earthly power. Kings, armies, and advisors could fail, but God never did. This realization allowed him to rest, not because life was easy, but because God was faithful.
In verse 6 of this chapter, David expresses the depth of his confidence. He declares that the Lord is his rock, his salvation, and his defense. This verse reveals the enormous trust that we are called to place in our God, who is the eternal and unchanging rock. If we stand firm in Him, we will not fall, regardless of the pressures around us.
He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved.

Notice the emphasis in David’s words: “He only.” David intentionally excludes all other sources of security. God alone is sufficient. The image of God as a rock speaks of permanence, strength, and reliability. Rocks do not shift with the wind or crumble under pressure. In the same way, God remains steady when everything else is uncertain.
Calling God his salvation, David acknowledges that deliverance comes solely from the Lord. Salvation here is not limited to eternal redemption, but includes rescue, preservation, and protection in the present life. God is also described as a defense, a fortress that shields the believer from harm. Because of this, David confidently declares, “I shall not be moved.”
This confidence is not arrogance, but assurance. David is not claiming personal strength, but resting in divine power. His immovability comes from God’s faithfulness, not from his own resolve. This is a crucial distinction for believers to understand.
If you are about to slip, friend, there is very good news for you. God can be your help and your present aid. Scripture assures us that the Lord is near to those who call upon Him. When our footing feels uncertain and our strength feels weak, God remains steady. In Him, your soul can find rest.
This is why David commands his soul to trust. He understands that circumstances can shout louder than faith if left unchecked. By directing his soul toward God, he silences fear and renews confidence. This same practice is available to every believer today.
So it is time for you to command your own soul to trust fully in the Lord. Do not allow anxiety, doubt, or fear to rule your inner life. Speak truth to your heart. Remind yourself of who God is and what He has promised. When you do this, you will not slip, because God is with you as a powerful giant who defends and sustains His people.
Throughout this chapter, we see a man who fully recognizes the power of God. David understands that standing firm in God’s path leads to peace that the world cannot offer. This peace is not dependent on favorable conditions, but on the unchanging character of the Lord.
Psalm 62 repeatedly emphasizes silence and rest before God. This does not mean inactivity, but quiet confidence. David’s soul is calm because it is anchored in truth. He does not rush into panic or despair, but waits expectantly on the Lord.
This posture of trust transforms how we face life. Instead of reacting impulsively, we learn to respond with faith. Instead of being overwhelmed by problems, we are strengthened by God’s presence. The storms may rage, but the foundation remains secure.
Blessed be our great and strong God forever. He is worthy of our trust, our confidence, and our praise. His power is unmatched, His faithfulness unbroken, and His promises sure.
Brother, trust in the Lord. Place your full weight upon Him and do not divide your confidence. God will help you in all your path. He will guide your steps, uphold you when you are weak, and give you rest when your soul is weary.
