The path of the wicked will be disturbed and destroyed. David describes the evil man and what will happen to him. They are wicked and practice iniquity, having no fear of almighty God.
Throughout Scripture, the way of the wicked is contrasted with the way of the righteous. While the righteous seek the Lord, trust in His guidance, and delight in His law, the wicked reject correction and choose paths that lead them away from God. David, inspired by the Spirit, makes it clear that such a way of life is not stable, nor is it secure. It may appear prosperous for a moment, but it is ultimately marked for ruin.
The evil man shows an arrogant attitude, thinking that his evil will have no end. That is why we see what this chapter of the book of Psalms says about what will happen to him and his path, for total destruction will come upon him.
Arrogance blinds the heart of the wicked. When a man exalts himself above God, he begins to believe that he is untouchable and that no judgment will ever reach him. This pride leads him to despise justice, mock righteousness, and oppress others without remorse. However, Scripture consistently teaches that pride precedes downfall, and no one who sets himself against the Lord will stand forever.
The author of this book shows that it is God himself who pronounces it. He will laugh because the day of the evil man will come. Let’s see:
The Lord shall laugh at him: for he seeth that his day is coming.
Psalm 37:13
This statement does not imply mockery born of cruelty, but rather the certainty of divine justice. God is not threatened by the schemes of the wicked, nor is He moved by their temporary success. The Lord sees the end from the beginning, and He knows that the appointed day of judgment will arrive at the precise moment He has determined.
From ancient times until now, the evil of men has gone very far. However, the Bible shows us that these wicked will meet their end, they will be destroyed by God because of the lack of mercy in their hearts.
History itself bears witness to this truth. Kingdoms built on violence have fallen, rulers who exalted themselves above God have perished, and generations that rejected righteousness have vanished. Though evil may spread widely and deeply, it is never eternal. God’s justice, though sometimes delayed, is always certain.
The psalmist perceived the nature of these men, showing how rude they were, without caring or being afraid that one day they will be destroyed and will no longer exist. These, as the psalmist says, will not inherit the land where the Saints of the Lord will be taken.
In Psalm 37, inheritance is a recurring theme. David reminds the faithful that while the wicked may possess power, wealth, or influence for a season, their portion is temporary. In contrast, those who trust in the Lord are promised a lasting inheritance. This inheritance is not merely physical land, but the blessings that come from living under God’s favor and ultimately sharing in His eternal kingdom.
Brothers in Christ, let us take into account that the ungodly man has little time left, and God laughs because his time is coming. These will have their reward and will not inherit the earth, for only the righteous will be able to obtain salvation and inherit it. Let us remain firm and fair, because God is with us.
This psalm therefore serves as both a warning and an encouragement. It warns those who persist in wickedness that their end is sure and unavoidable. At the same time, it encourages the people of God to remain steadfast, patient, and faithful, even when evil seems to prosper. The Lord sees all things, and He will act in His perfect time.
As believers, we are called to trust in this divine justice and not to be troubled by the temporary success of the wicked. Our hope is not in what we see today, but in the promises of God that endure forever. When we walk uprightly, seeking His will and obeying His word, we can be confident that our labor is not in vain and that our inheritance in the Lord is secure.
