Among the many biblical stories recorded in Scripture, one of the most profound and instructive is the account of David and Saul. This narrative reveals not only human weakness and jealousy, but also the faithfulness, protection, and sovereignty of God. For this reason, we will reflect on how God delivered David from the hands of Saul and his men, even when David’s life seemed constantly threatened. This story teaches us that God is always in control, even when circumstances appear dark and uncertain.
David was chosen and anointed by God to be king, yet for many years he did not sit on the throne. Instead, he lived as a fugitive, persecuted by King Saul, who was driven by jealousy, fear, and insecurity. Saul saw David not as a loyal servant, but as a rival. His heart became hardened, and his anger consumed him. Despite David’s innocence and faithfulness, Saul repeatedly sought to kill him. However, throughout this painful and prolonged trial, God never abandoned David.
This man thanks God for this marvelous act of deliverance, recognizing that it was not his own strength, intelligence, or skill that preserved his life. During all the years he was hunted, surrounded, and betrayed, God was with him every step of the way. David understood that survival in such circumstances was not a coincidence, but the direct intervention of the Lord. This acknowledgment of God’s faithfulness is clearly reflected throughout the Psalms.
David’s persecution was not brief or light. He lived in caves, deserts, and foreign lands, constantly fleeing from Saul’s army. He was separated from his family, deprived of stability, and forced to rely completely on God. Yet, even in these harsh conditions, David continued to worship, pray, and trust in the Lord. His faith was not dependent on comfort or success, but on a deep confidence in God’s promises.
In this psalm, we can clearly see the thanksgiving of the psalmist to the Lord for delivering him from the fury of King Saul. David does not focus on Saul’s cruelty, but on God’s faithfulness. He does not exalt his own endurance, but magnifies the Lord who sustained him. This perspective reveals a heart shaped by humility and trust in God.
They prevented me in the day of my calamity: but the Lord was my stay.

This verse captures the essence of David’s experience. His enemies “prevented” him, meaning they confronted him, surrounded him, and sought to destroy him at the moment of greatest vulnerability. The day of calamity refers to times of intense danger, fear, and despair. Yet, even in that moment, the Lord was his support. God became his stay—his foundation, strength, and refuge—when everything else failed.
David recognized that without God’s intervention, he would have been overcome. Saul’s forces were powerful, organized, and relentless. Humanly speaking, David had little chance of survival. However, divine protection does not depend on numbers or strength. God’s presence outweighed every threat. This truth gave David peace even in the midst of danger.
The enemies of the psalmist grew more determined over time to destroy him. Saul’s hatred intensified, and his pursuit became more aggressive. Yet the angel of God was always with David, guarding him and guiding his steps. Scripture records multiple moments where Saul came dangerously close to capturing David, yet God intervened—through warnings, circumstances, or unexpected events—to deliver him. Not once did God allow David’s enemies to lay a hand on him.
Because of this constant protection, we see David’s words of gratitude and acknowledgment that God was always on his side. David understood that divine favor does not mean a life without trials, but a life preserved through trials. God did not immediately remove Saul, but He faithfully protected David until the appointed time. This teaches us that God’s timing is perfect, even when it requires patience and endurance from His servants.
David’s story reminds us that being chosen by God does not exempt us from suffering. On the contrary, those who walk closely with God often face opposition. Yet, opposition is never greater than God’s power. The same God who delivered David remains faithful today. He sees the struggles of His people and is actively at work in their lives.
Dear brother, we must remember that no matter how strong or intimidating our enemy may become, we are not alone. We have someone who goes before us and behind us to help us. God surrounds His children with His presence and protection. He knows our fears, our weaknesses, and our battles, and He is faithful to sustain us.
Like David, we may face seasons where we feel pursued, misunderstood, or overwhelmed. The enemy may appear relentless, and deliverance may seem delayed. Yet, these moments are opportunities to deepen our trust in the Lord. When we rely on God rather than our own strength, we learn to rest in His faithfulness.
