Abstain from this

In chapter five of Paul’s first letter speaking to the Thessalonians, he exhorts them on various topics such as prayer, joy, being thankful, among others.

This chapter is filled with practical instructions that are meant to guide believers in their daily walk with God. Paul does not limit his exhortations to doctrinal matters only, but he focuses on attitudes, behaviors, and spiritual disciplines that should characterize those who are waiting for the return of Christ. Prayer, gratitude, joy, and discernment are presented as essential elements of a healthy Christian life.

From verse twelve to twenty-two Paul makes several recommendations so that they would be prepared for the coming of the Lord. One of those recommendations is the following:

Abstain from all appearance of evil.

1 Thessalonians 5:22

This exhortation is clear and direct. Paul does not only speak about avoiding evil itself, but also about staying away from anything that may resemble it or lead us toward it. As believers, we are called to be vigilant, understanding that our testimony matters not only before God but also before others who observe our conduct.

Let us beware and be on our guard, for we all know that the enemy’s actions are to break us from what we possess from the Lord, from rejoicing with those who do the mighty work of our Lord.

The enemy constantly seeks to distract, discourage, and divide the people of God. That is why Paul emphasizes the importance of spiritual alertness. When we are not careful, even small compromises can slowly distance us from the joy and peace that God has given us. Remaining firm in holiness protects our fellowship with the Lord and with one another.

That is why we see this great exhortation to recognize those who work in the work of the Lord (V12), those who direct the work of the Lord and admonish those who need admonition.

Paul understood that a healthy church is one where there is respect and appreciation for those who serve faithfully. Leaders and workers who labor in love should be valued, not criticized or undermined. Recognizing their effort strengthens unity within the body of Christ and encourages continued service.

When we see a brother doing the mighty work of God, doing what is good before the Lord, we should rejoice greatly and hold him in high esteem. These are the words the apostle speaks.

Rejoicing in the work of others reflects humility and love. Instead of jealousy or competition, Paul calls believers to support one another. When one member grows, the entire body benefits. This mindset promotes peace and mutual edification within the church.

It is notable that Paul wanted to leave a good union among his brothers in the faith, that is why we see his good wishes in The Peace of the Lord, asking us to encourage anyone who is of little encouragement so that he may continue.

Encouragement plays a vital role in the Christian journey. Many believers face trials, doubts, and spiritual weariness. A word of support, prayer, or kindness can renew strength and restore hope. Paul reminds us that patience and compassion are necessary when dealing with those who struggle.

Furthermore, abstaining from every appearance of evil helps us maintain a clear conscience and a strong witness. It reminds us that our actions, words, and decisions should reflect the light of Christ in a world that often walks in darkness. Living this way prepares us daily for the coming of the Lord.

So, let us always remember the verse we have just seen in this article, let us seek to keep away all kinds of evil, in the name of Jesus amen.
