David was a good king, and he is still known among us as that man who had a heart according to God’s, and in the words that we will see below we will be able to draw very important points about that message that David gave to his son Solomon who would be his successor in the reign. The Bible teaches us:
And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the Lord searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever.
1 Chronicles 28:9 (KJV)
As soon as possible we will take some points from these words of David to Solomon:
1- Recognize the God of your parents
It was essential for David that Solomon even at his young age understood that it was vital to “recognize” God as the God of his parents, as the God of Israel, and when we talk about recognizing, we are not simply talking about knowing something and now, but to act, to behave as someone who is truly aware of something or someone, in this case God.
2- Serve God with a perfect heart
Israel had its good kings, but it also had some very bad ones. Before David’s reign there was Saul, who is known to be disobedient to the Lord, and Solomon must be very clear that his heart must be firm in the things of the Lord.
3- The Lord searches hearts
This is a truth that we see throughout the Scriptures. There is no one like God, who is the only one who could search hearts, and Solomon had to understand that this God could know even the most intimate thoughts of him.
4- If you seek God, you will find Him
Jesus also spoke of this:
Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
Matthew 7:7 (KJV)
5- Warning: “But if you leave Him, He will cast you off forever”
This is also important, to understand that just as God was with Solomon, he could also be rejected like Saul, and it is important to understand this, that although God is a God of love, He is a God who demands holiness and walk in the fullness of His ways.
