Remember, then, what you have received and heard. This is a message to Sardis, a rich city, idolatrous and much more. But there are words here in verse 3 that one way or another can get our attention to turn to the Lord.
Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.
Revelation 3:3 (KJV)
It is always good to remember the good habits that we have acquired. It’s like self-advice, reviewing everything we learned once and seeing if we still stick with it.
And in this part Jesus is asking the church of Sardis to remember the good customs and doctrines, to keep that, and it often happens that many times we get lost along the way, and we forget what is truly important for everything that is happening around us.
How many times is this word written in the Bible? I assure you that many, because that is what God wants precisely, that we repent, that we live a holy life that obeys His Word.
The Lord’s Day should not take us as a surprise, however, because of Sardis’ way of living, this day could surprise them as a thief: “Well, if you don’t watch, I will come upon you as a thief, and you will not know what time I will come upon you”.
