The disciples were clinging to Jesus and totally dependent on Him, their hopes, fears, trust, everything was deposited in Jesus. But the Master, already in the 14th chapter of John begins by telling them that the moment would come when he would have to leave.
Can you imagine how disappointing it would be if the person into whom you had deposited all that is suddenly said to be leaving? The difference and the key in this story is that Jesus had told them “the Comforter will be with you every day”. Jesus was making a huge promise to them that even if He left, they would not be alone “ever”.
