The forbidden verse of the prosperity churches

Did you know that there is a verse which prosperity preachers do not mention? Well, yes, more than a verse, there is a text that tells us about the humility that we should have as servants of the Lord and it is good that we study it so that we do not fall into greed and become corrupted.

Something that “false doctrines” or false teachers have in particular is that they use bible verses that have nothing to do with what they want to express, taking them out of context so they to support something really don’t ¬†have support of the Scriptures.

Let’s see what 1 Timothy 6:3-10 says:

3 If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;

4 He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,

5 Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.

6 But godliness with contentment is great gain.

7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.

8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.

9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.

10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

The previous text tells us about maintaining the sound doctrine, of those people who forget the sound doctrine by filling their bank accounts, who forget that the Gospel is the only thing we should preach, they prefer to distort the biblical truths in order to carry a more softened message, a message that does not offend, and that way they take advantage of their motivational conversations to obtain more and more money and this ends up becoming a great greed.

The key verse that these false preachers do not want to speak is the eight:

And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.

The apostle Paul knew that as Christians we did not need more than that, what the Lord allows us to have, be little or much, for he himself said to the Philippians:

I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.

Philippians  4:12

So, verses like these should not be quoted by those who preach that being poor is a curse, that we must be rich because that is how God loves us.

Salvation belongs to our God
The Lord is my strength and my shield in difficult times
