Apart from Jesus we can do nothing

Jesus attributed certain words in the Scriptures, such as: “I am the true vine” “I am the light” “I am the bread”, etc. And Jesus is everything and there is no one or anything like Him. All our hopes are in Jesus, He is the engine of our lives. Without Jesus we can do nothing, because if we breathe, we talk, we work, we drink a glass of water, everything we do, we owe it to His mercy and great love and we must feel happy on this day for it.

The Bible says:

4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

John 15:4-5

Jesus tells us: “Abide in me”. And we must pay close attention to these words, since Jesus is not asking us for a favor, He is giving us the command that we should abide in Him and He also tells us that He remains in us. Staying in Jesus is the sign that we are bearing enough fruit and a clear example that we are true believers.

The second thing is that we can not bear fruit for ourselves, we can not pretend to live an anthropocentric Christianity, we must live a Christianity dictated by the Word of God, guided by God, fully understanding that only God can show us in a true way and that we can not walk without Him.

Brothers, we have been called to bear much fruit, to work hard for the Lord, to walk, to live, to breathe for God. Our tiny lives hide in God and we must always understand that, that He is the vine and we are the branches, and outside of Christ we can do nothing.

When Jesus says that apart from Him we can do nothing, He is reminding us of our total dependence on His grace. Human beings often think they can rely on their own strength, intelligence or abilities, but sooner or later life shows us our limitations. Christ uses the image of the vine and the branches to show that spiritual life, growth and purpose only flow when we remain connected to Him. A branch separated from the vine cannot survive, and likewise, a believer who disconnects from Christ gradually loses strength, direction and spiritual vitality.

Abiding in Jesus also means cultivating a close relationship with Him through prayer, obedience and meditation on His Word. It is not a passive attitude, but a daily decision to walk under His guidance. Many believers desire fruit, but few understand that fruitfulness is the result of remaining in intimacy with Christ. The more we remain in Him, the more our character is transformed, our faith matures, and our actions reflect God’s love.

Another important aspect is that bearing fruit does not always refer to visible achievements, ministries or works recognized by others. Sometimes the greatest fruit we bear is internal: patience formed in trials, faith strengthened in difficult moments, humility learned through obedience. These invisible fruits honor God just as much as external accomplishments, because they reflect the work of the Holy Spirit in the heart.

Also, the call to remain in Christ reminds us that we are not alone in the journey. Jesus Himself promises to remain in us, sustaining us, guiding us and strengthening us. This mutual permanence brings comfort to the soul, especially in moments of weakness or uncertainty. Knowing that the Savior walks with us gives us confidence to persevere and continue growing.

Let us, therefore, treasure this teaching. Every day, amid responsibilities, struggles and distractions, our priority must be to remain in Christ. Only then will our lives reflect His glory, and only then will we bear the fruit that lasts for eternity. He is the true vine, and without Him, nothing that we attempt will have true value. But with Him, everything is possible and everything has purpose.
