Did you know that the Lord has promised us through His Word that He will keep us from evil? In various parts of Scripture we are told about this and it is our duty to know these great promises that the Lord has made to us. But something very valuable to be understood is that this does not exclude us from having trials, since the trials teach us not to depend on ourselves but on God.
The apostle Paul wrote to the Thessalonians:
1 Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you:
2 And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all men have not faith.
3 But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil.
2 Thessalonians 3:1-3
There are many evils of which the Lord can deliver us, but believe it or not, the worst evil that the Lord can save or keep us from is the evil of listening to erroneous interpretations of the Scriptures from the mouths of certain men who only seek His own delight and not to give glory to God, and we can understand this when Paul writes to them: “for all men have not faith”. Possibly among them were some brethren who did not keep the doctrines of the apostles, but were based on their own beliefs, and is that the Christian community has always suffered more from those from inside than those from outside.
The apostle Paul also begins this chapter in a very important way saying: “Pray for us, that the word of the Lord may flow and be glorified, just as it was among you”. Brethren, the Word of God has run towards us and must continue to be glorified, we must continue to study and learn about God and this is achieved through the study of the Scriptures.
Finally, the apostle says, “But the Lord is faithful”. The Lord is faithful brethren, regardless of how many times we fail as believers, and yet He remains faithful. “Who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil”. The Lord has promised to keep us steadfast in these ways, since it is impossible to stand by ourselves unless it be by the grace of God.
The Lord will keep you from evil
=======================
But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil. (2 Thessalonians 3:3)
Throughout history of the Christian Church, evil men who looked for their own desires and didn’t care about doing harm to souls or displeasing the Lord, taught false doctrines from the Bible. An example were judaizers, who taught things like going on with Jewish rituals of Moses, practices that were only a figure to be fulfilled with the coming of Jesus Christ; or others that taught the Lord Jesus Christ was only a perfect man, not linked to divinity.
All they mislead people of the Church, harmed Christian fellowship, caused disagreements, schisms, which made brothers separate from their congregations. Sometimes there were errors of doctrine that also resulted in divisions in the Church.
In that way they did not fulfil the prayer of our Lord Jesus. “That they all may be one; as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that you have sent me” (John 17:21)
The apostle Paul said to the Church on Thessalonica the Lord would establish them, so that they would free from disagreements; and he would keep them from evil.
May the Lord God establish his Church in the Lord Jesus Christ, as our foundation.
