Fervent in spirit serving the Lord

What is a fervent person? Is a person who is very enthusiastic in what he does, not only showing interest but perseverance in the work he has decided to undertake. And it is clear that the Lord wants us to have fervor or persistence in everything we do. Imagine, if we need perseverance in secular things, how much more in heavenly things?

The apostle Paul said to the Romans:

11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.

12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.

13 Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

Romans 12:11-13

When we speak of the work of the Lord everything requires diligence and we must be fervent in it, since we often put diligence into insignificant things, and this is something we must understand, serving God is the greatest privilege that any human being can have and this must be great joy for us.

Do we have trials? These trials are not a big thing to stop the work of God in our lives. Is the burden too heavy? It does not matter, Faithful is the one who has called us and will keep us firm until the end. Am I too troubled? It is not enough to stop us, the people of God from ages ago have had tribulations, the early church was persecuted, the church has been persecuted for centuries, and none of this has been enough to stop the work of God, since the Bible says that hades will not be against the Church of our Lord Jesus Christ, and that church is you and me.

Friends, let us be joyful in hope, in the promise entrusted to us through the Scriptures, let us wait for faith, be constant in prayer, practice hospitality and, above all, be perseverant or fervent in the work of the Lord.

A fervent heart is one that refuses to grow cold, that refuses to settle into spiritual routine. It is a heart that continually seeks God, that embraces its calling, and that does not allow discouragement to extinguish the fire that the Holy Spirit has ignited within. Throughout Scripture we see many examples of men and women who displayed such fervor—people who, despite their weaknesses and limitations, served the Lord with a passion that could not be denied. They inspire us today to keep moving forward and not let our circumstances define our devotion.

To walk fervently requires intentionality. It means choosing to obey God even when emotions fluctuate, when strength seems limited, and when obstacles appear insurmountable. The world encourages apathy, comfort, and conformity, but the kingdom of God calls us to steadfastness, sacrifice, and perseverance. The apostle Paul, writing these words to the Romans, knew exactly what it meant to serve God amid hardship, and yet he exhorted believers to keep their zeal alive, understanding that spiritual fervor is not fueled by human willpower alone, but by our constant dependence on God.

“Be joyful in hope,” Paul says. Hope is not passive—it is an anchor in God’s faithfulness, a reminder that His promises are true regardless of what we see. Joy in hope means that even when the present is painful, the future God has spoken over us is glorious, and this certainty fills our hearts with strength.

“Be patient in affliction.” Patience does not mean resignation, but endurance with trust. Affliction has a purpose: it purifies, strengthens, and teaches us to rely more deeply on the Lord. A fervent believer is not one who avoids trials, but one who stands firm in them, knowing that God uses every hardship for our good.

“Be faithful in prayer.” This is the fuel of fervency. Without prayer, the spiritual fire weakens; with prayer, it grows. Prayer keeps our hearts aligned with God’s will, gives us discernment, and strengthens our inner man. Faithful prayer does not mean long or eloquent words—it means a consistent, sincere, humble dependence on the Lord.

Paul also reminds us to “share with the Lord’s people who are in need” and to “practice hospitality.” Fervor is not merely internal passion; it is expressed outwardly in love, generosity, and service. True spiritual zeal always produces visible fruit—it leads us to bless others, to open our doors, to extend compassion, and to reflect the love of Christ in practical ways.

The Christian life is not a sprint but a long-distance race, and fervency is what keeps us moving when others stop. It is what makes us rise each day determined to live for the glory of God. May we, therefore, nurture this fire within us, guard it, protect it, and ask God to continually renew it. And may our lives, marked by perseverance and devotion, testify to the world that serving the Lord is not a burden but the greatest privilege we could ever receive.

Those words of the apostle Paul deserve our attention and everyone of us have read the Minister’s exhortation, which cheer up to be fervent in serving the Lord.
His words have been of consolation for me. Thank you my Lord for your guide. I want to quote a paragraph from the Minister exhortation. It is as follows:
“Friends, let us be joyful in hope, in the promise entrusted to us through the Scriptures, let us wait for faith, be constant in prayer, practice hospitality and, above all, be perseverant or fervent in the work of the Lord.”
Should we cast these words into oblivion?
May the Lord God etch that in our hearts and help us to be fervent in Spirit, serving the Lord.
