The Lord is my helper; I will not fear

The Bible tells us stories with which we can identify with certain situations that happen to us in this transient world. One of those stories is about that widow who did not have to feed herself or her young son, they only had one last bite of flour and then wait for death, because those were times when bread was scarce in the people of Israel. But this story can teach us a lot, since God arrived at the perfect time through the prophet Elijah and met the need of that woman. This narrative reminds us that even in the darkest moments, when all human hope seems lost, God has the power to open doors where none exist and to provide in ways we never imagined.

We must trust fully in God, in the midst of scarcity, of nakedness, of problems that seem to have no solution, of disease and everything that stands like a giant. We must hold our flag high and pronounce: “Nothing will diminish my faith, this is just a process that will bring me closer and closer to God.” The widow had no strength left, no resources, and no future, yet God turned her last handful of flour into an opportunity to demonstrate His power and His faithfulness. The same God who multiplied her food day by day is the same God who sustains us today.

The Bible says:

5 Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said,

“Never will I leave you;
never will I forsake you.”

6 So we say with confidence,

“The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.
What can mere mortals do to me?”

7 Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.

Hebrews 13:5-7

When we see ourselves in times of monetary need, we often get the feeling of wanting to own large sums of money and even question God, wondering why many people who are not Christians have many possessions and we do not. The psalmist Asaf at one time did the same, asking why the wicked prospered while the righteous suffered. He struggled with this thought until he entered the sanctuary of God and understood that earthly prosperity does not equal divine approval. God measures us not by how much we possess, but by how much we trust Him.

Many times we compare our condition with that of others and forget that God deals with each of His children in different ways. Poverty, scarcity, and difficult situations are not signs of abandonment. On the contrary, many times they are evidence that God is shaping our character, strengthening our faith, and bringing us into deeper dependence on Him. The widow of Zarephath had to reach the point of absolute emptiness to see the fullness of God’s provision. In the same way, our needs often reveal the greatness of God.

The truth is that we must trust these words that God gives us through these verses. Believe that God will not forsake us or leave us, that His strong hand will accompany us in any situation of life, and that everything that happens to us is because God wants to make us more in His image. Behind every trial, there is a divine purpose; behind every delay, there is a lesson; behind every moment of scarcity, there is an opportunity to witness the power of God in ways we would never see in abundance.

Let us remember that God remains faithful, even when we are faithless. He is our helper, our sustainer, and our refuge. Just as He provided for Elijah and the widow, He will provide for us—not always in the way we expect, but always in the way we need. Therefore, let us walk confidently, trusting that the God who multiplied flour in a time of drought can multiply peace, strength, hope, and provision in our circumstances today.
