We have seen throughout history that the Lord’s church has been persecuted, mistreated, and opposed by all those who resist the truth of God. From the earliest days of the apostles until today, believers have suffered rejection simply for standing firm in the gospel. Yet, those of us who have placed our faith in the Lord must continue moving forward regardless of what others say or do. Our confidence is not in human approval but in the God who sustains us and calls us to live differently.
Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.
Romans 12:14
The apostle Paul teaches us a profound principle: do not focus on those who mistreat or slander you. Instead, bless them. This is completely contrary to the natural reaction of the human heart, yet this is precisely what demonstrates the transforming power of Christ in us. We are called to pray for people, asking God to open their eyes and transform everything that is not aligned with His will, so that they may also become children of salvation.
When we read the Scriptures, we encounter countless examples of persecution. In the Old Testament, prophets were rejected, mocked, and even killed for speaking the truth. In the New Testament, Jesus Himself was mistreated, falsely accused, and persecuted by those who refused to accept His message. Despite witnessing miracles and hearing His wisdom, many hardened their hearts against Him.
The disciples also endured abuse, insults, and threats from people who did not understand the message of salvation. Many of these individuals were influenced by the adversary, listening to the voice of evil rather than the voice of righteousness. Satan seeks every opportunity to stir up hatred against God’s people, attempting to silence the gospel through fear.
This is why we strongly believe that God has given us wisdom to understand His Word and to persevere in teaching it faithfully. Even when others lack understanding, even when opposition rises, we must continue doing good to the entire world. Our mission does not end because of rejection; on the contrary, rejection affirms that we are walking the same path the early believers walked.
Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.
Romans 12:15
The wise Solomon wrote in the book of Ecclesiastes that everything has its time: a time to cry, a time to laugh, a time to mourn, and a time to dance. This teaches us the importance of compassion. We are called to walk with others through their moments of sadness, loss, and pain, offering comfort as Christ has comforted us. At the same time, we share in their joys, victories, and celebrations. Christian love is not indifferent; it feels, it shares, and it walks alongside others through every season of life.
Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.
Romans 12:16
This final exhortation is essential for Christian living. We must walk in humility, for arrogance is detestable before God. The proud rely on themselves, but the humble acknowledge their dependence on the Lord. Scripture tells us that God looks at the proud from afar but draws close to the humble in heart. Therefore, we should never consider ourselves superior to others. Whatever wisdom or ability we possess is a gift from God, not a reason to boast.
Let us remember that our lives must reflect Christ. Whether we face persecution, sorrow, joy, or fellowship, everything we do should be pleasing to the Lord. Humility, compassion, harmony, and perseverance in doing good are the marks of a true follower of Christ. May we live out these teachings faithfully, trusting that God sees, rewards, and strengthens all who walk in His ways.
