Why, my soul, are you downcast?

Possibly many of us feel down today, without strength, without hope, without knowing what to do, and we feel that our soul is in a prison that we believe we can not leave. Those servants of God in the Bible suffered all that, but they kept believing always in God, with their foreheads always held high because they had their hope in the giver of life.

The psalmist David wrote:

9 I say to God my Rock, “Why have you forgotten me? Why must I go about mourning, oppressed by the enemy?”

10 My bones suffer mortal agony as my foes taunt me, saying to me all day long, “Where is your God?”

11 Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.

Psalm 42: 9-11

Remember that David was a man of God, faithful in all the service that corresponded to him, however, none of this would free him from having to suffer afflictions. In the same way, we do not believe that because we are children of God we are not going to suffer, we remember that we are on earth and we are not exempt from anything at all, the only thing that makes us different from people without God is that we have a hope that never ashames us and that hope is called Christ.

A certain preacher said: “When you are a mature man in God you will be broken into a thousand pieces.” This is one hundred percent true, since each pain, each test marks us, but those marks give us maturity and that maturity gives us hope to trust more in God.

David says: “Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.” In that deep pain that David felt, he only had to do this fervent prayer, telling his soul that he still had to continue praising his God and this prayer was a great ray of hope in that storm.

Do you feel distressed to such a magnitude? Go before God, pray with faith, command your soul to still praise God.

  1. I can agree with this too.
