Sweet refuge

Pain, deception, bitterness, disappointments, sadness, hunger, nakedness, abandonment and countless other things are what we go through many times, but none of these things are strong enough to separate us from the love of Christ. Our God is powerful to stand us firm before these things and this is demonstrated through the biblical stories that accompany us today.

Many times we face situations that appear overwhelming, as if life itself were collapsing under our feet. Yet even in those moments when everything seems dark, the love of Christ becomes our unshakable anchor. Not because we possess strength in ourselves, but because His love sustains us beyond our understanding. The believer learns, through trials, that nothing is wasted in God’s hands; every tear, every struggle, every unanswered question becomes a testimony of divine faithfulness.

There is a story in the Bible that tells us that moment in which the disciples were on the boat and there was a great storm, how they were very scared, then, imagine yourself in the middle of the sea, in a wooden boat and the big ones waves over you, the sea extremely enraged, is it not to be feared? The disciples were trembling, just as you and I would.

When we meditate on this event, we realize that fear is a natural reaction. However, the presence of Jesus in that boat changed everything. Life teaches us that storms are inevitable, but it also shows us that the One who commands the winds and the waves remains sovereign. How many times have we looked at our own storms and forgotten who is with us? The disciples, even seeing miracles, still trembled. This reminds us that faith is a continuous process of learning to trust.

God is a specialist making the impossible possible, in doing great works when the human arm can not do anything else. God is a specialist taking us out of problems that we would never attain by our own strength, beloved, God is the God of the impossible.

This truth should fill our hearts with hope. When we reach the end of our abilities, God begins to show His glory in ways we could never imagine. The Bible is full of stories where His intervention transformed what seemed lost into a testimony of victory. Our situations may differ from those ancient narratives, but His power remains the same. The God who opened seas, shut lions’ mouths and raised the dead is the same God who accompanies us today.

There’s a song that I like a lot and one of his strophes says:

Sweet refuge
in the storm
is Jesus Christ the Savior
who encourages me and feeds
with His word and His love

In that refuge we must rest, we must live, trust, walk and believe every day that in our worst moments, that in our worst trials He is there to give us comfort. In those difficult times God is a specialist doing wonderful works. Trust in God!

When storms rise and confusion surrounds us, it is precisely there where the believer discovers the beauty of God’s sustaining grace. We are not called to pretend that pain does not exist; we are called to trust in the One who walks with us through every valley. His Word is the nourishment that lifts our spirit, and His love is the shelter that guards our soul. The more we learn to rest in Him, the more we see that nothing can overthrow those who stand on the Rock.

The psalmist said:

2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,

3 though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging.

Psalm 46:2-3

All the men of the Bible went through perhaps harder times than ours, however, they believed in the powerful hand of God.

Their confidence was not based on their circumstances but on the character of the One who sustained them. They understood that God’s promises were stronger than the storms around them. Today we are called to embrace that same confidence. Regardless of what we face, the Lord remains our refuge, our strength and our ever-present help. Nothing can separate us from His love, and this truth gives us courage to move forward with faith and hope.

Christ is coming
The fear of the Lord is wisdom
