What are you giving to Jesus?

Human beings are well known for wanting to receive more than for wanting to give. And this belongs to our nature and we must fight against this, because what privilege do we have to receive? o What reward do we have to receive? I assure you that none. In the Bible there is a bliss for those who are generous:

In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”

Acts 20:35

We love receiving divine favor, and that is why many times our prayers are more to ask things of God than to go to worship him or simply to be speechless before His might and majesty. Prayer is not simply to bring our list before God, it is also to render adoration.

Let’s stop seeing God as a father Noah to whom we want to ask for all our needs, let’s look at it with a deeper look, as someone to whom we must pay honor and adoration.

The Bible tells a well-known story in chapter 12 of the book of John:

1 Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.

2 Here a dinner was given in Jesus’ honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him.

3 Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

John 12:1-3

John tells us that a dinner was prepared in honor of Jesus in the house where Lazarus lived, there was also a woman named Mary who took a pint (16 ounces) of pure nard, a “very expensive perfume”.

So that you understand how expensive that perfume was, with this would have covered Maria’s wedding. In truth the perfume was worth a lot, because the author did not stop making the emphasis when he said: “It was a very expensive perfume”. However, that woman, spilled that perfume on the feet of the teacher, who had time putting it together (V.7) for that moment.

The great act of that woman did not remain there, but continued humbling herself before the Master when she wiped His feet with her hair. What a great act! She was not asking for a miracle, she was not asking Jesus with a big list, No! She simply went to bring him the best she could have, everything that came from her heart, what was best for Jesus. Have you considered giving the best to Jesus?

At that time there was a person who found that very expensive perfume to be “wasted” in this way:

4 But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected,

5 “Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages.”

6 He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.

John 12:4-6

There is nothing too expensive for our Lord, there is nothing that is “too much” for Him. If we join all the constellations, all beauty that exists in the earth, the sun, the moon, the stars, the sea, everything that shine, everything beautiful, if we put all that together and carry it as an offering for Jesus, still that is not enough. He deserves the best! Do not find what you give to God as much, because nothing is too much for Him.

Jesus, knowing the heart of Judas, said to him:

8 You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.”

9 Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there and came, not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.

John 12:8-9

We have to be like that woman, bring the best before Jesus, prepare to go before Him and pour out our best praise, our best adoration and this will make us blessed Christians, because not only do we go before Him to receive His gifts, but to give Him worship.

  1. Thanks for this reminder of the wonderful outpouring of her precious gift to Jesus. So a reminder to consider what I am giving to Jesus. The Carol we sing at Christmas, In The Bleak Mid Winter. The last two lines of the final verse.

    What can we bring Him
    To give Him our heart.

Perhaps we need to consider if we have given our heart to Jesus.

All to Jesus I freely give
    I surrender all
