Have you lost the joy of salvation? You need to recover it

The Bible tells us of a man of God named David, who was a shepherd of sheep, then became the armourer of Saul, and of course, the great king of Israel. The Bible also teaches us that this man was according to the heart of God. He was an extremely courageous man and full of faith in God. But none of these things keep us from erring, because to err is human.

During his reign he made serious mistakes and of course, he was admonished by God for them. Remember that our God does not coexist with sin, since He is holy.

Even though David made great mistakes, this was never an excuse for him to forget God completely, but David had something very special, and that was that at certain moments he knew to go before the presence of God to heal his error and try not going back to committing it.

Psalm 51 is very important, since it is a prayer of David after he made a mistake. He wrote it after being warned by the prophet Nathan for having took to Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah the Hittite (2 S 11: 3).

1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.
2 Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.

Psalm 51:1-2

The first thing we should see here is that David was not happy with what he had done. He was totally impregnated, dejected, tormented; he simply recognized with all his heart that what he had done was totally serious and that God did not like it.

Did you know that many of the times we fail we feel bad not because God is angry with us but because of what people can say? If this is our way of thinking then we are in error, we can not feel more weight of guilt for what people think than for what God thinks.

Apparently, for David the big problem was not what people might think, but he knew that he had hit the Father’s heart with his attitudes and that’s why he continues to pray:

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.

Psalm 51:10-11

Although this prayer was after being rebuked by Nathan, David had committed other sins which the Bible does not keep silent. And this is why David’s prayer is so intense, he was devastated by his sins, and he needed urgently to recover holiness in his life, the constant search for God. David uses the expression: “Do not take your holy spirit from me”.

Can you imagine without the presence of God? Moses once said, “If your presence does not go with me, I will not go.” In the same way, for David it was impossible to be king of Israel and not be accompanied by God, since the secret of his reign was that God was with him.

David also expresses:

Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

Psalm 51:12

In this verse we can understand that David had lost the joy of salvation and was asking for it again, and continues to ask for a noble spirit. Did you know that when we lose the joy of salvation we incur in things that are not pleasing to God? When we lose this joy we become cold people and are moved by our humanity.

It was no wonder David asked for that joy to return to his life, because he knew that without that joy he could do very bad things, like the ones he had done before.

From this psalm we can learn a lot and at the same time ask ourselves: Have I lost the joy of salvation? If you have lost it run before God, do not leave it for tomorrow, do it now, this is the time, go before Him and say: Father! Give me back that joy, because without that joy I am lost and do things that I am not supposed to do.

May the Spirit of God be with us and may we be humble enough to recognize when we have lost the joy of our salvation.

  1. At this time, I need this. I’m having a hard with something I did not do. I loving with people that are special. I would never hurt anyone. I was accused of hitting a client. So I had to read this today to understand what the Lord wants me to do. I still do not know. I guess I’ll wait on His decision. In Jesus name I pray.

  2. I just don’t know what to do. I’m sad because I had to quit my job. But I’m so weary and tired. I loved the people that I worked with, but that one staff was new, and missed interpret my actions with a client.
