The paralytic and the pool

Sometimes we find ourselves in difficult times, but in those moments we must remember that God will always be with us, and that He will help us no matter how difficult the path is.

There was a man who had long been sick with paralysis in his legs, this man was longing to be healed of his illness. And it was difficult to reach health:

1 Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals.

2 Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades.

3 Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed.

John 5:1,2-3

The Bible tells us that Jesus went to Jerusalem, and there was also a pool that was visited by an angel from time to time. Here people came from everywhere to be healed of their diseases: blinds, lames, and paralyzed. These sick people were always attentive to the water moving to immediately throw themselves on the water and receive healing.

The Bible says that the first one who managed to submerge was healthy of any disease. The paralytic whom we mentioned at the beginning of this article had long been there prostrate of his illness, and due to that evil of which he suffered he could not reach the pond in time when the angel came down.

That man grieved in a way when he saw that people came and had the easiness to enter the water. He longed for someone to help him enter. But nobody did it because everyone was focused on receiving his miracle.

One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years.

John 5:5

Despite that long time he had prostrated, this man never lost hope that one day he could be healed of his illness.

6 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”

7 “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”

John 5:6,7

Jesus saw the desperation of this man and the need to be healed. He knew that this man had a long time sick and offered him healing. The paralytic did not know that the one who was speaking to him was the One who had control of all things and who could heal his illness. We clearly see what this man was thinking. He said he did not have anyone to help him to get into the water when it was agitated, but he said that when he did his best to get there it was too late, because more people were going ahead.

8 Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.”

9 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.

The day on which this took place was a Sabbath,

John 5:8-9

It is important to believe and have faith and confidence that one day our miracle may come as happened with this man. He thought his healing was far away, but it was not like that. He believed that Jesus was a simple human rather than maybe he was going to worry about helping him get to the pool, but he received something much better, he was healed without having to go down to the pool.

If we are going through a difficult time, do not stop or despair, keep looking at Him who can make the impossible possible. That is Jesus, the one who never fails, the one who is always aware of us.

  2. The paralytic and the pool
    ======================
It was patience and a fervent faith that had the paralytic near the pool, waiting for the angel that removed the water there; and it was the compassion of Jesus who healed him. John tells us what happened that day:
“When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he said to him, Will you be made whole?
The weak man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steps down before me.” (John 5:6-7)

“Jesus said to him, Rise, take up your bed, and walk.” (verse 8)

That man was healed and took his mat and carried it, even though that day was a day of rest.

God was glorified; and now we are faithful people, that recognize that Jesus loves people and listens to the poor: to those who suffer and wait on the power of God
