Let’s be good citizens

The parable of the Good Samaritan is a story that we should all read, because many times we need to be more supportive in the environment where we are. Sometimes the same way of thinking of the people who live in our society makes us harden the heart, but we have to take into account that we should not allow our heart to be hardened when it comes to doing good to a person.

The book of Luke in its chapter 10 tells us about the story of the “good Samaritan”. Jesus tells the story of a man who went from Jerusalem to Jericho and was assaulted by thieves, who left him almost dead. Then He tells us about another character: “a priest”, who meets the Samaritan. Being a priest, maybe we thought that he was going to pity the man who was down without being able to stand on his own, but it was not, the priest was not kind enough to do this, but the parable tells us :

Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.

Luke 10: 31

Sometimes those who seem the most noble are those who do not do good. Let us take care to behave like this priest.

The story continues, and tells us about our next character: “The Levite”. Oh, we think maybe a Levite, that person who has been set apart to serve in the temple, is supposed to have learned to treat his neighbor, but it was not like that, but he says:

Likewise a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side.

Luke 10:32

Now we have our last character: “The Samaritan.” This was the last person you would expect to help the poor man, because Samaritans and Jews did not take each other. However, he was the only one who deigned to help this poor man who was deprived of his rights:

33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion.

34 So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him.

35 On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.’

Luke 10: 33-35

How much care this Samaritan had of that man! He did not know him, he was not a relative of him, however, this man had extreme solidarity with that poor man lying on the streets.

Oh brothers, may our solidarity be no less than that of that man.

Our great question is asked by Jesus at this time:

36 So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?”

It is obvious that we will all answer that he is the good Samaritan, but it is not enough for us to know what is good or who is the one who does good, but we have to apply it on a daily basis. So, since we know how to behave, how we should be supportive, then Jesus tells us on this day:

Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.” (V.37)

  1. Let’s be good citizens
    =================
In general, we are taught about what
behaviour should be as Christians, as followers of Christ our Master and Lord. Jesus taught us we must be compassionate people that love others—even our enemies.

But sometimes unbelievers prove themselves to be better citizens than those who hold a position in the Church. So we need to remember that to be a good Christian implies to have mercy on others who need our help.

It is Jesus who teaches us to be good citizens when the occasion arises.
The Lord Jesus Christ gives us a good example to imitate:

“But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion.
So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him.
On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.” Luke 10: 33-35

The story of that Samaritan is clear on what a true Christian must to do to please his Lord.

If God has shown mercy to us, we also ought to have mercy on needy people.
