The rest of the people of God

Rest is something that all human beings desire. Everyone who has a job wants to get home and rest. Even, we all want to reach an age where we do not have to work, and so we can rest from everything we have worked for so many years.

Not only do we want to rest from secular things, we also want to rest from those spiritual battles we wage every day. There is a book about rest and it is “the pilgrim’s progress”. In this allegory we realize that there was a very tired man who wanted to rest from the heavy baggage he had on his back. This burden represented all the struggles a Christian goes through in his life. We also have this heavy baggage on our back, but did you know that God promises us rest from such heavy luggage? Let’s see this Biblical promise:

‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

Revelation 21:4

In this perishable world we suffer so many adversities, so many disappointments, pain, bitterness, betrayals and a lot of other things that we suffer in this long pilgrimage. You will say: “Everyone goes through these things, not just Christians.” This is true, but you know what? Although we all go through all that, we have different things that distinguish us from them, what are them?

1- We have a living hope

The word of God says:

3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you,

5 who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.

1 Peter 1:3-5

We are not like those people who live suffering without hope. We have a living hope in the trial, and is that one day we will be resurrected and we have an incorruptible and pure inheritance, and the best news is that it is not an earthly inheritance, since the earthly inheritances are perishables and we do not take them with us after death. The good news is that we have been promised an inheritance that lasts forever, from eternity to eternity.

2- Jesus has promised to be with us until the end

Did you know that many people in the world live fighting without the hope that someone will help them? They live looking for the wrong refuge, they take refuge in people who later get tired of having to give them advice, of being their cloth of tears and in the end they end up abandoned without any desire to live.

Unlike them, we have a promise that does not fail.

The Bible says:

and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Matthew 28:20

Jesus has promised to be with us every day, in every step we take, in every situation of life, every second, every moment, He is there consoling us. Glory to God for this.

3- He promises us never to suffer

The only person who has given such a promise of never to suffer is our beloved Lord, a human being does not have the power to do this. However, do you know that Jesus has promised it to you?

Previously we had quoted this verse:

‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’[b] or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

Revelation 21:4

The only thing this teaches us is that there will come a time where all our sufferings will end. Where we will be like children again, without worries, without work, and that will be the moment where we will rest from all our sufferings and God will give us that rest which we have waited for so long.

Let us not lose heart, for our reward is in heaven and faithful is the one who has promised it. Let’s embrace these great promises and wait on God with all our heart.

  3. The rest of the people of God
    =====================
As the Lord God makes all that exists in six periods of time, which are called days, and he rested the seven period, so he commands his people to rest one day for every six days of work.

This seventh day must be kept in remembrance of the Work of God. The people of God keep this day dedicated to the Lord: on the seven day of the week every believer ought to rest with all his family. On this day of rest, no remunerated work must be done, save that work which is done to help needy people.

The eternal rest is required for—and anticipated by—any believer who accepts God’s promises and trusts the Lord will give them peace and rest: yes, rest from all their troubles in a place where no mourning, crying or pain will exist.
“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” Revelation 21:4

There will be another dispensation: the time of grace shall be over. And then all God’s promises will be fulfilled.

May the Lord God be with us here and sustain us until the last day of our lives on this earth
