The offering of the poor widow

A widowed and poor woman was at the time she was going to deposit the offering. Later on we will show you several biblical versicles that tell us about this woman.

As Jesus looked up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury.

2 He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins.

Luke 21: 1-2

Here the Bible tells us that Jesus was in the temple, and he saw many rich people depositing their offering. But something happened in that place and it was that those rich people offered, but they did not do it from the heart but they gave what they had left and only offered to be seen by others.

However, a widowed woman, without thinking much, deposited a small amount for the rich people, but great for her, because it was the only thing she had left: two very small copper coins of little value.

This woman did not mind the fact that she was not going to have money left for her house, but being grateful for what the Lord had allowed her to have, she offered the only thing she had left.

Then Jesus tells his disciples:

3 “Truly I tell you,” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others.

4 All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”

Luke 21:3,4

This woman who did not have a husband found it difficult to get money to survive, she had to work hard to get money of very little value for the sustenance of her home.

Also, Jesus emphasized to his disciples the fact that we commented earlier, that although the offering of the widow was small in quantity, she gave more than all the others, because she gave everything she had, while the others only gave what they had left.

As an advice for us at the time of offering, it is good to remember to do it with our heart and with joy, not with sadness, because when we give with sadness, God does not receive that offering. The Word of God says that the one who gives to the poor, to God lends him:

Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord,
and he will reward them for what they have done.
