We are saved by grace—and this simple but profound statement carries a vast and glorious meaning. To understand the depth of this truth, we must ask ourselves several important questions. What does it mean to be saved? Why were we in need of salvation? What is grace, and why is salvation attributed to it alone? The best way to begin answering these questions is to return to the Scriptures, where God Himself explains the condition of humanity and the greatness of His saving work.
Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) Ephesians 2:5 (KJV)
The first thing we must understand is what the apostle Paul says: “we were dead in sins.” This is not poetic language—it is a spiritual reality. Humanity died spiritually the moment Adam and Eve disobeyed God in the Garden of Eden. By eating from the forbidden tree, mankind entered a state of rebellion, corruption, and separation from God. This act brought death into the world, and that death spread to all people. The Bible explains the universal condition of humanity in the following passage:
Every one of them is gone back: they are altogether become filthy; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
Psalm 53:3 (KJV)
Human nature tends toward sin. From the beginning, mankind has desired evil rather than God. Sin is not merely a mistake; it is rebellion against a holy God, and its consequence is death—spiritual death, eternal death, separation from the Source of life. This is why Paul declares that we were dead. But here is the miracle: while we were dead, Christ made us alive. What a glorious truth! We contributed nothing to our salvation. Dead people cannot revive themselves—but Christ, by His mercy, resurrected us spiritually and gave us new life.
Why then are we saved? The answer is found in the very condition described above. We were dead in sins, enslaved to evil desires, incapable of choosing God, incapable of pleasing Him. We were spiritually lifeless. And yet Christ saved us—He delivered us from death and sin. He united us with Himself. He gave us life “together with Him.” Salvation is not merely forgiveness; it is resurrection. It is being brought from death to life, from darkness to light, from condemnation to righteousness.
This is why we say, and the Scriptures affirm, that salvation is by grace. Grace means unmerited favor—God giving us what we do not deserve. Christ gave us life when we didn’t deserve even a glance from Him. This grace was not given to us because we were good people, or moral, or spiritually strong. The opposite is true: we were spiritually dead, corrupted, sick with sin, desperate for a healer. And God, rich in mercy, provided the perfect Healer and Redeemer—His beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.
There are many people today waiting for a miracle from heaven. Perhaps you are one of them. You may be asking God to fix a circumstance, heal an illness, solve a problem, or open a door. But Scripture wants you to see something greater: the greatest miracle has already been given. Jesus died for you on the cross of Calvary. He bore your sins, your guilt, your shame, your condemnation. He absorbed the wrath of God that you and I deserved. And He rose again so that you might have eternal life. No greater miracle exists than this.
Praise God for this indescribable grace! He has loved us with a love far greater than any earthly love. He saved us not because we were worthy, but because He is abundant in mercy. We are saved by divine grace alone—and no one could ever give us a better gift than that. Let your heart rejoice, let your soul worship, and let your life reflect the wonder of this truth: we are saved by grace through Jesus Christ.

If we look at people, in general, or if we sincerely examine ourselves, we realize that all of us are prone to do evil: likely to tell lies, to fall into feeling sexual attraction towards others outside of marriage, to wish to have those things which have our neighbor’s—their car, house, even their woman—. We also realize that we do not truly love others except our family, and we can feel jealous or even hate others. The Bible tells us:
“Everyone has turned away, all have become corrupt;
there is no one who does good,
not even one.” Psalm 53:3
Therefore, before God’s eyes, we—like other people—do not deserve to be in the presence of God, who is pure and absolutely holy.
How then, can we come before God or enter his House?
Our evil actions are contrary to the Law of God, by which we shall be judged at the Judgement Seat of Christ.
Surely all people should be separate from God and condemned to darkness of Hell.
And yet, for those of us who believe, Jesus Christ paid our guilts. He has purified our souls and we are perfect people for God, through his sacrifice on Calvary, where he was crucified.
The Bible says that his shed blood cleanses those who believe in Him of sin: those people who accept his person and work by faith.
Again, we acknowledge that, by nature, all people are spiritually dead and devoid of the Lord’s glory. But Jesus Christ has saved us by an undeserved gift he gives to believers: by grace, if we believe in Him. Our salvation is given to us by faith, not by any good work we think to have done. This is what the apostle Paul said to Christians in Ephesus.
“For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
(Ephesians 2:8-9)
May all of us who have believed be sincerely grateful to the Father, who has brought us to Jesus. And let’s thank Him because we are saved by his grace
