Joseph: From jail to palace

Perhaps you have ever read and/or heard the story of Joseph, the great dreamer, the man of the interpretations of dreams, the man who became great in Egypt. In one way or another, we have all heard about the life of this man of God. It is important to teach about his life, because through him we can understand more closely, how to be faithful to God in the midst of corruption, pain and deception. The Bible tells us in Genesis 37: 3

Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made an ornate robe for him.

Without a doubt, this love of Jacob or Israel towards his son Joseph, caused great envy among his brothers:

When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him.

Genesis 37:4

The envy and hatred of his brothers did not stop only in Jacob’s love for Joseph, but continued to increase because of the kind of dreams and visions he had:

Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more.

Genesis 37:5

The question we must ask ourselves here is: What was the dream that Joseph had, for which his brothers hated him even more? The Word of God declares the following:

6 He said to them, “Listen to this dream I had:

7 We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it.”

Genesis 37: 6-7

We should take into account that this dream was an important vision from God for Joseph, and we know its meaning, one day he would reign over his brothers, they like it or not.  We must know this, the will of God goes way beyond everything we think, hate or want.

But, what Joseph never thought was that telling these dreams was going to cause him strong pains, although he did it with the best intention, his brothers simply found all wrong, because they hated him. Now, we must understand something very important, and is that God in his sovereign will allowed this to happen with a plan: to take Joseph to Egypt.

Beginning with verse 19 of chapter 37 of Genesis, the evil entered definitively into the hearts of his brothers, they were willing to kill him !:

“Come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we’ll see what comes of

Genesis 37:20

However, Reuben interferes and says: “Do not kill him.” And they determined to throw him in a cistern. After all these events that we are going to find around the whole chapter, we will realize all the afflictions that Joseph had to go through: accusations, imprisonment, etc. However, God did not forget him. God was with him in every moment of his life, and each of his afflictions were part of the divine plan.

In chapter 41 we find the following statement from Pharaoh:

39 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has made all this known to you, there is no one so discerning and wise as you.

40 You shall be in charge of my palace, and all my people are to submit to your orders.Only with respect to the throne will I be greater than you.”

This young man who suffered so many hardships, who was despised by his brothers, of which Jacob did not know more, now becomes governor of all Egypt. And later on, the dreams he had were fulfilled:

This young man who suffered so many hardships, who was despised by his brothers, of which Jacob did not know more, now becomes governor of all Egypt. And later on, the dreams he had were fulfilled:

Genesis 42:6

Amazing. This story teaches us a lot: It teaches us that there are afflictions that we are going through, that we believe that the whole world is coming at us and we believe that we will never have a way out, but it is not like that, there is a God’s divine plan for us, and someday the Eternal God will free us from them and put us in a better place.

  2. Joseph: From jail to palace
    =====================
Joseph, Jacob’s favourite son who was born when he was an old man, was chosen by God in order to make the people of Israel stay in Egypt for four hundred and thirty years, until the day they were taken out from there by Moses.

The sovereignty of God was manifested and his power shown to all nations, as He punished Pharaoh’s haughtiness with wonders so that His Will would be done.

The wisdom God gave to Joseph was the reason why Pharaoh put him as the governor of Egypt. All people was under his orders, and he became the second man in Egypt till his death.

“Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, ‘Since God has made all this known to you, there is no one so discerning and wise as you.
You shall be in charge of my palace, and all my people are to submit to your orders. Only with respect to the throne will I be greater than you.’”
    Genesis 41:39-40

In the book of Genesis we read of Joseph’s facts, which show us how the power of God was on him. Joseph was faithful to God and fearful of Him.

Joseph was used by almighty God to help Israel and his family in their needs, when they were in Canaan, in the land the Lord had given to them: and because they went to Egypt, they survived in the years of famine.

Joseph’s behaviour is something to imitate for all of us in these times the Church of Christ is going through.
The Lord is powerful to change our lives; and he can take us out of any difficulties we may go through, as He did with Joseph
