Praise for the mighty deeds of God

Psalm 66 is one of my favorite Psalms, due to the fact that it urges us to praise our God for His powerful works, and it is something we must do in our day-to-day lives. We must continually praise God for all the wonders He has done for us, beginning with the simple yet profound blessings we often overlook—such as the air we breathe, the strength to rise each morning, the provision we receive, and above all, the gift of salvation. Christ died for our sins and has redeemed us by His blood. Is this not the greatest sign that we should give glory, honor, and praise to God? The entire message of Scripture leads us to a life of gratitude and worship, acknowledging the mercy of a God who has intervened in human history to save His people.

Let us remember that one of the Hebrew customs was to remind every generation of the mighty works that God had done for the people of Israel. This continual remembrance ensured that the following generations would never forget how majestic, powerful, and good God has been. They taught their children about the wonders of God—His deliverance, His miracles, and His faithfulness throughout every season. Sometimes we as parents fail in these things. We forget to teach our children all the good that God has done throughout biblical history and all that He continues to do in our own lives today. Passing down faith is not simply a tradition; it is a responsibility given to us by God, who desires that His mighty acts be proclaimed from one generation to another.

In verse 6 of Psalm 66 the psalmist reminds us of the wonderful deeds of God in the desert, when He brought out the people of Israel from Egypt with a strong and mighty hand. The splitting of the Red Sea was not only a historical event but also a demonstration of God’s absolute power and His unwavering commitment to save His people. It was a testimony to all nations that the God of Israel is sovereign over nature, time, and all earthly powers.

He turned the sea into dry land: they went through the flood on foot: there did we rejoice in him.

Psalm 66:6

The verse number four is the axis of this entire chapter, as it reveals the universal call to worship that echoes through all creation:

All the earth shall worship thee, and shall sing unto thee; they shall sing to thy name. Psalm 66:4

This verse inspires us to give glory to God and teaches us the great purpose for which we have been created: to worship God. Worship is not merely an activity but a lifestyle, an attitude of the heart that acknowledges God’s greatness in every circumstance. Whether in joy or sorrow, abundance or need, worship aligns our hearts with the will of God. It lifts our eyes above our circumstances and reminds us that our lives are part of a much greater story—God’s story of redemption and faithfulness.

Psalm 66 also encourages us to reflect on how God has personally worked in our own lives. Just as Israel was delivered from bondage, we too have been delivered from the bondage of sin. Just as they walked through the sea on dry ground, God has opened paths for us where there seemed to be no way. When we consider His mercy, His protection, His provision, and His never-ending grace, our hearts should naturally respond with gratitude.

And today is a good day to join the psalmist and declare with confidence the final words of this psalm: “Blessed be God, which hath not turned away my prayer, nor his mercy from me.” (Psalm 66:20, KJV). These words remind us that God listens, God cares, and God extends His mercy without fail. May this truth lead us to live lives filled with worship, thanksgiving, and reverence toward the One who has done great things for us.

Be patient and pray
