Wisdom that descends from above

The Bible tells us about different types of wisdom, however, there is one that must always dwell among us as believers: “the wisdom that descends from above.” This is the wisdom that does not originate in human intellect, earthly philosophies, or temporary reasoning, but in the very character of God. We can achieve this wisdom through the Word of God, and it is certain that it will be useful in our daily lives, guiding our decisions, shaping our character, and helping us navigate circumstances with spiritual discernment. True wisdom is not measured merely by intelligence or eloquence, but by a transformed heart that reflects Christ in every action and thought.

Let’s read James chapter 3:13-18:

13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.

14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.

15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.

16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.

17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

There are believers who think they have the wisdom from above; however, by their fruits they show the opposite. Although they may seem very intelligent and possess wide knowledge of the Scriptures, their conduct often betrays a lack of spiritual maturity. The wisdom from above cannot simply be claimed—it must be demonstrated through a life marked by peace, gentleness, mercy, and integrity. A person who walks in divine wisdom does not live in constant conflict, bitterness, or rivalry. Instead, his life displays humility, patience, and a sincere desire to honor God in all things.

The Christian life consists of many elements, challenges, and responsibilities. We are called to live differently from the world, to shine as lights in the midst of darkness, and to continually grow in holiness. This requires discipline, effort, and daily dependence on the Holy Spirit. Are you willing to do all this? Dear brother, this is a high price we must pay, but it is also a glorious calling. Every believer must ask himself whether he is living according to earthly wisdom or according to the wisdom that comes from God.

Let us strive to live in peace with one another. Let us consider carefully the words that come out of our mouths, for speech is a powerful indicator of the condition of our heart. Our attitude toward others, the way we treat those around us, and the fruit our lives produce all reveal the kind of wisdom we possess. If our actions continually stir up conflict, suspicion, or division, then we must humbly acknowledge that we are not walking in the wisdom from above.

The apostle James tells us that when we display envy, bitterness, pride, or strife, we do not possess heavenly wisdom. Instead, we are guided by earthly reasoning that is centered on self. Such wisdom is unstable, corrupt, and ultimately destructive. God calls us to something far greater. He calls us to reflect His character, to pursue purity, and to cultivate mercy. True wisdom is not loud or arrogant; it is gentle, approachable, patient, and rooted in righteousness.

Let us therefore seek this wisdom from above earnestly and consistently through the Word of God and prayer. Our purpose as believers is to grow in grace, to be transformed into the image of Christ, and to bear good fruit that glorifies our heavenly Father. Every day provides an opportunity to cultivate this precious wisdom that descends from above. May our lives be testimonies of God’s grace, showing that His wisdom truly leads us to peace, righteousness, and spiritual maturity.

    =====================
The Lord Jesus Christ, speaking about false, hypocrite people, said in a metaphor of the fruits of a tree:
“Why by their fruits you shall know them.”
    (Matthew 7:20)

By the words of men or women, you can find out what is in their hearts. It is not useful to be a deceitful person, given that they shall give account of each idle word in the day of judgment.

A good conversation, fruit of a repented heart, is acceptable to God. Out of a fool’s mouth come idle words, that will be reprimanded by the Lord in the day of judgment.

By contrast, wisdom that descends from above is acknowledged by wise people, in whom the Spirit of God abides, as in His temple. So the apostle James writes in his epistle:

“Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.”
    (James 3:13)

A good conversation is fruit of a renewed mind, with meekness and works that seek God’s glory and our brothers’ spiritual edification.

Let God’s power and fear, as well as our love to people, lead us to be single-hearted men and women, with that good conversation which descends from Heaven
