The Lord is my shepherd

Psalm 23 is one of the most famous biblical passages. We see in the homes of both Christians and non-Christians a picture with the Bible open in Psalm 23. But do these people know the great meaning of this psalm? Sometimes we have things that we do not know their meaning, it is the same as Moses when God gives him a rod, Moses did not know what he had in his hands. In the same way, it is good that we learn the great meaning of this Psalm so that we may understand how wonderful is our God.

Let’s read this powerful Psalm 23:

1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

2 He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters.

3 He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.

4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over.

6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell[a] in the house of the Lord Forever.

Undoubtedly, the most mentioned and known part of this chapter is the first verse: “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want..” The first affirmation that David makes in this glorious first verse is that The Lord is his shepherd, we ask ourselves: What is the work of a pastor? This David says in the lower part of verse three: “He leads me in paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.” The work of a pastor is to guide the sheep, to take care of them, and David is speaking to us that the Lord is our shepherd, takes care of us and guides us in the right place, even though we walk half disoriented.

The second powerful affirmation that we see in the first verse is: ” I shall not want.”. This second part of the first verse of Psalm 23 leads us to place our trust in the Lord our Shepherd. Therefore, as servants of Christ we must trust more in that he gave his only Son to die on the cross, which at the moment of being crucified did not say “I will not die for this wicked world”, but said “My father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me, nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will. “

This beautiful Psalm continues telling us “He makes me to lie down in green pastures”. Here he is telling us that no matter what is presented before us He will be there to help us get up in difficult times, in moments of anguish, that in those moments He will take care of us.

In verse number four he also expresses to us the great security that we must have in that pastor:

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

Psalm 23:4

It does not matter in the situation in which we find ourselves, no matter how dark the valley, no matter the danger, why? Because on our side is our Shepherd and in those moments He will guide us through the best path. In difficult times we must believe that God will help us to continue trusting in Him, believing in His promises that are faithful and true and that never fail, and that if God promises, He fulfills above all that He wants to lift, as He tells us. The final verse of Psalm 23:

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever.

Psalm 23:6

When I read this wonderful reading, I rejoice to read this beautiful word spoken by the psalmist David.

Here we leave you with this beautiful reflection of Psalm 23, let us trust that God will always be by our side in our moments of weakness, in moments of anguish, in times of difficulties, because He is our Shepherd.

Those verses of Psalm 23 have been of comfort and help to many people through Church history.

I dare to copy all of them again, even though they are reflected in the text the Minister of this page offered us today—to whom I thank for it.

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters.
He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell[a] in the house of the Lord Forever.” Psalm 23:1-6

I frequently repeat this Psalm in my mind, even I pronounce its words when I am afflicted, in fear or trouble.
Really it is faith which sustains me and makes me say: “The Lord is my Shepherd.” And I will fear no evil: that is what I say to myself when I think about the path of shadow of death, because we all must go down the path of death on the day the Lord takes our souls from our bodies; and then we’ll appear before the court of Christ. So I repeat: “I will fear no evil”.

When I wonder if my source of income will fall I repeat to myself: “I shall no want”, because thy rod and staff shall lead me to “green pastures”, and they shall comfort me.
By faith I believe the Lord has overcome death and the Devil, through his death on the cross and his resurrection. His sacrifice and his spilt blood have made me perfect before the eyes of the Father, so I will be welcome in his House.

All of us that believe in Jesus can have the assurance we will be led by the angel of God in that day: “for he has said, I will never leave you, nor forsake you” (Hebrew 13:5).

May all of God’s children trust in Him and in the promises He has made to us, because He will fulfill them.

From the bottom of our hearts, let us respond to our God with a sincere feeling of gratitude: yes, for the goodness and mercy the Lord God has shown to us sinners. And let’s give glory to God in the person of Jesus, our Saviour, who was sent by the Father through the power of the Holy Spirit
