You shall worship only one God

It is important that we direct our worship solely to our God. The Bible teaches us that He is a jealous God, not because He acts with human frailty, but because His glory is perfect and cannot be shared with idols made by human hands. Throughout history, many peoples crafted figures of wood, stone, or metal—objects they could neither see nor hear, yet which they worshipped. However, the true God, the Creator of heaven and earth, demands pure, sincere, and unmixed worship, for our devotion must be directed exclusively to Him.

This is precisely what the title of this post reflects: a solemn reminder that we are to worship only God. He is the author of life, the one who sustains the universe with His word, and the one who, with a mighty hand, brought Israel out of slavery in Egypt. That liberation was not merely a historical event; it was a glorious manifestation of God’s power and love for His people, teaching them that there was no other being worthy of trust and honor. Moses, as prophet and leader, constantly called the people to keep their hearts away from idolatry, because he knew that this was a constant temptation that could lead them astray.

That same call remains valid today. Although wooden idols are no longer worshipped as in ancient times, other modern “gods” exist: money, fame, materialism, self-sufficiency, or anything else that takes God’s place in our hearts. When something becomes our absolute priority, when our trust turns towards the created and not towards the Creator, then we run the risk of moving away from true worship.

That is why Moses insists to the people, and to us as well, that only God deserves glory and power forever. No one else can take His place, for there is no other being capable of saving, forgiving, or working miracles like Him. Recognizing this truth leads us to a life of reverence, gratitude, and obedience. Worship is not just singing or raising our hands; it is living each day aware that we depend entirely on Almighty God.

The verse we will look at next is a clear and direct warning that God gives to the people of Israel through Moses. It is not optional advice, but a command that shows how important it is to God that His people remain faithful. Idolatry not only led the people astray, but also brought them to spiritual and moral ruin. That is why God, as a loving Father, warned and corrected them to prevent them from falling into paths that would ultimately destroy them.

For thou shalt worship no other god: for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:

Exodus 34:14

When the Bible says His name is “Jealous,” it doesn’t refer to human jealousy, but to the exclusivity of His relationship with us. He created us, redeemed us, and sustains us; therefore, it is right and proper that our worship be for Him and no other. God knows that only in His presence do we find life, peace, and direction, and that anything we try to put in His place will ultimately harm us.

As believers, we must constantly examine our hearts. What occupies our thoughts? What governs our decisions? Where do we truly place our trust? May this biblical passage not only be a historical warning, but a personal invitation to renew our devotion to the true God. Living for His glory is the greatest privilege and the highest expression of love we can offer Him.

May we remember each day that there is only one God worthy of worship, the same God who delivered Israel, the same God who sent His Son to save us, and the same God who remains faithful for all eternity. To Him be the glory, the honor, and the praise, now and forever.
