Is Jesus God? From the early church to today, the firm church of God has proclaimed that Christ is the Lord and God the Creator. Christ was not a simple prophet or a simple envoy, but was the incarnate God Himself, how can we prove this? Through different verses we can find in the Scriptures, which give the same attributes of God to Jesus. Today we are going to see the deity of Christ through the first chapter of the Gospel according to St. John.
John’s statement about the deity of Christ
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 The same was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
John 1:1-4 (KJV)
The word “Word” comes from the Greek “Logos” which means “Word” … How can we realize that John in his context is speaking of Jesus? Just read the entire chapter, and we will find verses 14, 15 and 16 (KJV):
14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
15 John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.
16 And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.
If we amplify verse number one in a more plain way, he is saying: “In the beginning was Jesus, and Jesus was with God, and Jesus was God”. Under the context in which John speaks this is what he means: Jesus is God. “That Word or that Jesus or that God became flesh, and we saw His glory”.
John continues in verse 18:
No man hath seen God at any time, the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
How is it that no one has ever seen God and that the Son has made him known? How have you made it known? How can someone other than you, make yourself known in the same way? How can we get to the point of comparing a person with God? Did you know that even angels, nothing created, nothing in this world can be compared to God? God is incomparable and if He is unique then no one can represent Him as if he were Himself.
He says: “No one has ever seen him, the only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he has made him known”: We are talking about the very God that no one has ever seen incarnate in Jesus Christ.
I believe that John 1 is one of the chapters in the Bible that deals more closely with the deity of Christ, for he himself says: “Jesus was God,” “all things were created by Him,” etc.
Let us not be deceived by false doctrines that want to teach us otherwise, be alert and study the safest and most reliable Word that is The Bible.
